October @MLPL

October is Canadian Library Month!  During the month, libraries and library partners across Canada raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play for people in Canada.

In Ontario, the first week of October features First Nations Public Library Week (October 1-4), with this year’s theme being Remember When. The third week of October is Ontario Public Library Week (October 20-26), with this year’s theme being Libraries for Life.

Be sure to stop by either MLPL Branch to check out what we have to offer, and to help celebrate your local library during Canadian Library Month!

What else is going on @MLPL?

We have recently made some changes to how we catalogue our newest Adult Non-fiction books, making it easier for our members to borrow them.  Although we will continue to get many new titles added to our collection on a regular basis, you will no longer be restricted to borrowing them for only two weeks.  You will also be able to renew them, and borrow more than two of our newest titles as soon as they hit our shelves!

Keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks as we’re updating our e-mail addresses!

Moving forward we will no longer be sending e-mails from the @pclib.ca domain and instead emails will be coming from @mlpl.ca.

Don’t worry, any e-mails that get sent to the old branch address, or to old staff e-mails, will still be received but any new e-mail from the branch or a staff member, or any replies, will come from an @mlpl.ca address.

Please update your address books as the new address to request an ILLO, register for a program, or to ask a question is:  info@mlpl.ca

You can still reach the Port Carling Branch by phone at 705-765-5650 and the Bala Branch at 705-762-1086 during regular hours.

We can’t wait to see you @MLPL!

Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II

by Elyse Graham

(Adult non-fiction book)

The untold story of the academics who became OSS spies, invented modern spycraft, and helped turn the tide of the war. At the start of WWII, the US found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a precursor to today's CIA, was quickly formed-and, in an effort to fill its ranks with experts, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly, literature professors, librarians, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work-and these surprising spies would go on to profoundly shape both the course of the war and our cultural institutions with their efforts. In Book and Dagger, Elyse Graham draws on personal histories, diaries, and declassified OSS files to tell the story of a small but connected group of humanities scholars turned unlikely spies.

Nancy's Novel Notes

Everyone On This Train Is A Suspect

by Benjamin Stevenson

Picture a train with a group of crime and mystery authors on board, traveling together on their way to attend a festival, when one of the passengers dies. A murder?

It would seem that, collectively, this particular group of passengers should have a clue as to how to go about solving this crime, but then, they would also know how to commit one!

Comedian and author, Benjamin Stevenson invites the reader to travel along with Ernest Cunningham, a struggling writer and narrator of the story. Ernest sets out to solve the crime by following very specific rules for writing a crime novel. Hoping this will be his next book, Ernest guides the reader through each discovery, offering hints and re-caps to help the reader come to their own conclusions. He actually wants the reader to figure it all out before he does!

This is a fun read, cleverly written, with an obvious nod to Agatha Christie. The story is complete with a good cast of characters, each a suspect of course, unexpected twists and a surprise ending.

The cover illustration suggests that this is a ‘not so serious’ novel so If you think you might enjoy a break from your usual crime solving mysteries, pick this up as a read for pure entertainment, and a few laughs!
