What else is going on @MLPL?

Our  Friends of the Library are running their 13th annual Silent Auction.  The auction will will run online from July 11th - August 22nd.

This year, with the Friends support, the library plans to continue to offer a variety of educational  programming for all ages, while continuing to find new ways to reach members of the community outside of the branches through a “Pick-Up Point” pilot project. In addition, expanding the collection through the acquisition of new tech resources, Wonderbooks, and a refurbishment of the Bala drop box are all initiatives that will be aided by this fundraising.

Let's make this year's auction another success! Your support helps us continue to enhance Muskoka Lakes Public Library services and facilities.

Check the auction site frequently, as items get added as donations are received!

sustainable crafts, gifts and projects for all seasons

by Becci Coombes

(Adult Non-fiction)

With an emphasis on foraging and upcycling, Becci explores the ways we can create beautiful projects using materials readily available in the garden and home. Upcycled projects include gorgeous home textiles woven from bed linen, mini lampshade fairy lights for a summer's evening and even a fabulous picnic table from an old suitcase. Capture the breeze of autumn with wind chimes made from old necklaces and cutlery and learn how to felt old sweaters, turning them into cosy wreaths, brooches and purses for winter. There is also a section on working with willow, with projects encompassing everything from woven birdfeeders (with home-made fat balls!) to festive ornaments.

Brownstone

by Samuel Teer

(Young Adult fiction graphic novel)

In the summer of 1995, almost-fifteen-year-old Almudena is sent to live with her estranged Spanish-speaking father, and together they renovate a brownstone and build a relationship while Almudena navigates the Latin American side of her heritage for the first time.

An exciting teen coming-of-age epic from author Samuel Teer and debut graphic novel artist Mar Julia, Brownstone is a vivid, sweeping, ultimately hopeful story about navigating your heritage even when you feel like you don’t quite fit in.

Perla The Mighty Dog

by Isabel Allende

(Junior Picture Book)

Perla is a mighty dog who has two superpowers—making people love her, and roaring like a lion. When she finds out her human brother, Nico Rico, is being bullied at school, she knows she has to step in! But what will Perla do?

In a charming and poignant story about the bond between child and pet, Isabel Allende makes her children’s literary debut.

And Then There Were None

(DVD miniseries)

And Then There Were None is a dramatic adaptation of the best-selling crime novel by Agatha Christie. The story follows 10 strangers who receive an unusual invitation to a solitary mansion based remotely off Britain's Devon Coast. Among the guests is an unstable doctor, an anxious businessman, an irresponsible playboy, and a governess with a secret. Cut off from the outside world, the group arrives at its destination, only to find that darkness awaits them. As people start to mysteriously die, the members of the group realize there is a killer among them.

Each month we will include a title or two that a staff member has recently read. Yes, we could call it Staff Picks, but where's the alliterative fun in that?

So, without further ado, please enjoy

Lindsay's Laudable Literature

Asking For A Friend

by Kerry Clare

Asking for a Friend is the third novel by Kerry Clare, and in my opinion, her best to date. Spanning over two decades, Asking for a Friend introduces us to Clara and Jess when they first meet at University, when all things seem possible and everything is new and exciting.  I loved how this book was able to discuss the intricacies of women’s relationships with each other, without being trite.  Rarely do we get to read about the type of friendship that Jess and Clara have, and Kerry Clare does it with her brilliant use of dialogue, sense of place, and her willingness to tackle difficult topics head on. Her wry humour and timely observations are woven into a heartbreaking, honest and raw story that was wonderful and refreshing.  It’s light enough to be a fun holiday read, while packing a real punch; I really enjoyed this novel.
