Why have a library card?

Libraries are free. Libraries offer a safe space for children and adults. Libraries provide a sense of community. Libraries help promote literacy.
Books, magazines, videos, e-resources, programs, and even Ontario Park passes can all be enjoyed!
What are the reasons you have a library card?

This and That
  • Thank you Friends of the Library and to all who donated and to all who bid in the Friends of the Library's annual silent auction. Through the volunteer efforts of the Friends group and from those who participated, $8,000 was generated to be used for library needs in Bala and Port Carling!
  • Another thank you for service given goes out to Port Carling Blooms gardening group who have replanted our canoe garden and barrels to a fall theme of flowers. What would we do without our community volunteers?
  • Have you considered being on the library board? Elected Township of Muskoka Lakes council will be seeking library board members after the October municipal elections. Watch for their announcements on the Township of Muskoka Lakes website.
  • Did you participate in any of the summer library events? If so, we'd love to hear what you would like more of and any suggestions and comments that you might like to share with us. Send us an email: muskokalakes@pclib.ca.
  • Have you checked your library account now that summer is over? You may be surprised to find that there is a stray item still on your account when you thought that you had returned all items. Or perhaps, there is a hold placed on a book that you need to cancel because you know that you won't be back at the library until next year. Please take a moment to go online to check your account. Give us a call if you need help. 705-765-5650

by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail

A collection of essays about reconciliation and anti-racism by Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors from across Canada.
A Knock on the Door : The Essential History of Residential Schools from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
by National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

"It can start with a knock on the door one morning. It is the local Indian agent, or the parish priest, or, perhaps, a Mounted Police officer ... The officials have arrived and the children must go." So began the school experience of many Indigenous children in Canada for more than a hundred years, and so begins the history of residential schools prepared by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC).
Orange Shirt Day
by Orange Shirt Society

On her first day at Residential School, Phyllis Webstad was forced to take off her shiny orange shirt. The shirt was taken away and never returned. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad's story. By wearing an orange shirt on Orange Shirt Day you are helping to send a message that Residential Schools were wrong, and that every child matters.
