Maybe you have been meaning to learn a new language. If so, Mango Languages offers courses in more than 70 languages. If you are thinking about learning a new skill, Lynda.com has classes in programming, web design, photography, audio and video editing, and many other subjects. All these courses are free to use with your library card.
 
Whatever your resolution is, the library has resources that can help you stick to it. You can find books that can help you get in shape, stop procrastinating, quit smoking, eat healthier, get your finances in order, or organize and declutter your home.

Radon Action Month
 
Radon is the primary cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers, and one in four homes tested in Nevada has elevated Radon concentrations. 
 
The Nevada Radon Education Program of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will be offering informational presentations and free radon test kits.

HISTORIC RENO PRESERVATION SOCIETY
History of LGBTQ Reno
 
January 16, 5:30 - 7 pm, Northwest Reno Library
 
As far back as 1882, Reno had an LGBTQ presence and is representative of the small but thriving LGBTQ communities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
 
Historian and LGBTQ scholar Jeff Auer will cover this time period through the Great Recession, including the history of the Reno Gay Rodeo and its effects on the world. 
 
Fiftieth Anniversary of
the Reno Philharmonic
 
January 27, 12:30 - 1:30 pm, Downtown Reno Library
 
Cultural geographer Dr. Engrid Barnett, curator of the Nevada Historical Society’s recent exhibit, The Biggest Little Orchestra in the World, will discuss the history of the Reno Philharmonic, which this year celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.

Building Your Family Tree
 
You've taken the DNA test. Now what? In this six-class series, learn how to build your family tree and see how you are connected to your matches. Classes are Thursdays, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, January 17 through February 21 at the Sparks Library. Registration is required.
 
 
Microsoft Excel Basics
 
Want to learn Microsoft Excel?  Need help learning how to create a worksheet? Attend the library's Microsoft Excel class. Trained staff will help you navigate and learn the basics of Microsoft Excel.
 
This class is part of a four-part series. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 15 through 24 at the Sierra View Library.

In this beginner level internet safety class, learn how to prevent malware and viruses and how to avoid becoming the victim of a phishing scam.

All Washoe County Libraries will be closed January 1 in observance of New Year's Day and January 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
 
The North Valleys Library will additionally be closed January 22.
