HISTORIC RENO PRESERVATION SOCIETY 
Community Engagement and Collaborative Archeology
at the Stewart Indian School
 
The Stewart Indian School in Carson City, Nevada, attempted to remove Native children from  tribal communities and assimilate them into mainstream society. A collaborative archaeology project at the school connects two seemingly disparate aspects of removal, engaging both young people and elders from several tribes.
 
Presented by Sarah E. Cowie, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Anthropology, UNR.
 
The History of Camping in Nevada & the Sierra Nevada
 
This presentation will cover the development of public lands for camping and the building of campgrounds, roads, and trails, and will also examine the development of outdoor equipment specific to camping, and the many styles of camping, ranging from leave-no-trace backpacking, to
luxury glamping and the popularity of children’s summer camps and the history of groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts.

the Truckee Meadows
 
Pat Wallis creates landscapes using oil on canvas and patinated copper.
 
Her work will be on display at the Northwest Reno Library November 2 through December 28, with a reception Saturday, November 23.
Flora & Fauna Fiber Art 
 
 
Holly Gardner uses fabric, thread, acrylic paint, watercolor crayons, and oil pastels to create landscape quilts, flora, and fauna. 
 
Her work will be on display at the South Valleys Library through December. There be a reception Saturday, November 9.

Food for Fines
 
During the month of November, patrons can bring cans or boxes of non-perishable food to any Washoe County Library System location in lieu of paying overdue fines. Washoe County Library patrons are asked to bring one non-perishable food item for every overdue book or other item. (Food cannot be exchanged for lost or damaged library materials.)
 
In support of efforts to combat hunger in our community, donated food will be delivered to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada; donations made at the Incline Village Library will help support Project MANA.

Give the Gift of Reading
 
For the fourth year, Washoe County Library System is launching Give the Gift of Reading, an exciting campaign in support of children’s literacy. 
 
Your commitment to sponsor at least one book will help prepare children in our community for an early start in reading and learning. We hope that you will be able to join us in supporting this initiative.

Library Closures
 
In observance of Veterans Day, all libraries will be closed November 11. The North Valleys Library will also be closed on November 12.
 
All libraries will be closed on November 28 and 29 in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Family Day. On  November 27, the Spanish Springs Library will be closed, and all libraries with evening hours will close at 5:00 pm.
