Rashomon
This film features two examples of early camera techniques. In the court sequences, the camera is set up to face the witnesses from a higher perspective, placing the audience above looking down at them in judgement. The camera then switches perspective during the flashback shots of the woodcutter, foreshadowing his discovery of the crime via a panning shot.
During filming director Akira Kurosawa asked the actors to model their movements after lions and panthers. Kurosawa was heavily influenced by the wildlife documentaries of husband-and-wife team Martin and Osa Johnson, and had the actors watch their films for character inspiration.
The phrase "The Rashomon Effect" was coined after the release of the film. The term relates directly to the plot and refers to the unreliability of multiple witnesses when differing points of view come into play.
