| Happy New Year! Welcome 2024! We wish you all health, happiness and prosperity for this new year!
Many library visitors have noticed that open hours for Garden Home Recreation Center are increasing on January 2 to 7:00 am - 8:30 pm Monday - Friday, with 8:00 am - 1 pm Saturday hours beginning on January 13. We are excited that THPRD is able to give the community more building access, and want to clarify that our library hours are not changing and will remain:
Monday through Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Saturday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Sunday CLOSED
Winter Reading Challenge
For winter reading this year, we challenge you to read a "mirror" book and a "window" book. Mirror books are about people and places you already know. Window books feature people and places you don't know. Pick up a reading log in the library. All ages are invited to participate. Logs are due back by March 31.
Instead of a prize drawing this year, we're asking participants to help us decide what to add to our Library of Things collection. Each completed log will serve as your vote between three new potential items. The winner will be added to our collection! Check out our winter reading page to see the options.
Oregon Cultural Trust & Year End Giving
Did you know that Garden Home Community Library Association (GHCLA) is a qualified cultural nonprofit for Oregon Cultural Trust's tax credit? Find out how to maximize your support for arts and culture while earning a tax credit. The GHCLA Board is amazed and grateful for your financial support! The library has received 40 gifts in December alone, totaling over $4,000. This brings us up to $7,800 for FY 23-24 and closer to our goal of $20,000 in individual donations by June 30, 2024. Thank you for supporting our small and mighty community library!
Seeking Speakers
Inspired by an event that our friends at North Plains Public Library did, we are hoping to host a "Letters from Home" series this summer. We are seeking two more speakers. If you are from another country and would be willing to about your culture, customs, history, and food, please contact Heather Waisanen, our adult services librarian.
| Interlibrary Loan Recap
When an item is not owned by a library in Washington County, we may be able to borrow the item from another library in the United States. This is done through a process called "Interlibrary Loan (ILL)." We can request books, magazines, audiovisual items, and articles or chapters for patrons that are available in the continental US. {We cannot request digital items such as e-books and video games.} We can request items from all types of libraries: colleges, university, and special libraries (we've received an item from a Presidential Library in the past!). Each lender sets the due date and items must be picked up and returned only to the library that processes it for you.
We kept track of all the lenders this year and thought it would be fun to share the statistics. In 2023, GHCL processed 502 interlibrary loans for patrons. Items came from 44 states. Eleven states had one library that lent an item. Oregon libraries sent the most items - 180 - with Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) sharing 29 items, the biggest lender of any library in the U.S. Rounding out the top three sharing states are Washington (91) and Illinois (32).
Here's our tracking map of where all the interlibrary loans came from in 2023. | |

Tuesday Night Book Group | Tuesday, January 9 New start time!
6:30-8 pm Live & in-person GeRoom (#7)
It's 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California's first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the world's first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes.
