Happy Autumn!
Celebrate the Freedom to Read
Banned Books Week, Oct. 1 to 7, 2023, draws attention to books that have been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries. In 2022, the American Library Association (ALA) registered 1,269 attempts to censor library materials. This is the highest number of challenges since the ALA began compiling censorship data more than 20 years ago, and nearly double last year's attempts of 729. See ALA's Most Challenged Books list of 2022.
Oregon too saw an increase in challenges. The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) received reports of 46 challenge incidents for 96 titles from public and school libraries around Oregon between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Although this is a slight dip in the overall number of challenge incidents (down from 54 reports in 2021-2022), several involved multiple titles. Since OIFC started tracking this data in 1987, this is a historic high. See the lists and resources section for some of the titles challenged in Oregon.
WCCLS and GHCL, believe in the the freedom to read. Free access to books, ideas, and information in public libraries is essential for education, employment, and self-government. Libraries affirm the right and responsibility of parents to guide their children’s library use, and the right of Americans to choose their own reading material. Read WCCLS' blog post about Banned Books Week 2023. WANT TO ADD ANYTHING FROM THE PROCLAMATION HERE? Or Video or other?
Summer Reading Recap
Over Summer Reading, Garden Home Community Library gave away 1,450 books to participants in 2022 (versus 1,302 in 2021). We had 288 logs turned in by 117 readers from babies to adults. Three readers turned in over 10 reading logos each, which totals nearly 327 hours of reading. All together Garden Home read 115,200 minutes, or 1,920 hours. Way to go, everyone! Whether you turned in one log or multiple, you are all reading superstars! 💫 Stay tuned for winter reading, which starts in January 2024.

Mark and Helena (seen in the picture above) Greathouse will perform a musical comedy set to the accordian about their life together since 1968, when they met as foreign students in West Germany, to the present time. Through flashbacks the show highlights some avant-garde Czech songs from the 1930s between the two world wars as well as later during the cold war. They share their firsthand experiences of living through the cold war – on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain. “Life is a Cabaret” contains twelve mostly cabaret songs, both American and Czech. It includes a mixture of well-known Czech songs and original compositions written by Mark Greathouse.
