April 2020
Community Library Supervisor

Hello West Slope Community,

We have certainly missed seeing all of you, but we are still working hard for you. We have been developing our Book a Librarian service where you can connect with us over the phone to get help accessing our ebooks, eaudiobooks, newspapers, streaming movies, and other electronic resources. We’ve been working on our collections to stay current with new publications and media that will be released in the next few months. We have also developed online programs for all ages for the month of April!

This month we’ve set up virtual spaces for you to hear stories, connect with other readers in our community, learn from an expert from The Society of Financial Awareness, find fun ways to expand your reading horizons, and become a backyard scientist. You can read more about these opportunities below.

Take care,

Kristen Thorp

Dear Neighbor Project
While we might all be feeling the impact of disrupted schedules and closures, older adults are experiencing severe isolation now more than ever. The Senior Loneliness Line suggests taking this opportunity to reach out to an older adult in your life who might be experiencing isolation. Take 5 MINUTES to check in on your neighbor, call your grandparents, or help a young person write a letter or draw a picture and mail to the Senior Loneliness Line at the address below. They will help your letter get into the hands of an isolated older adult in our community.

Senior Loneliness Line – “Dear Neighbor Project”

Portland, OR 97239

Tips and Guidelines for letters:
  1. Address the letter to “Dear Neighbor”
  2. Please don’t include any personally identifying information. First name and age of the letter writer is fine.
  3. Write about your favorite subjects, hobbies and other interests.
  4. Ask a question! Examples might include: What’s your favorite book/movie? Do you have any pets? Where were you born and who was president? What advice would you give to a young person?
Draw a picture and write a story about it!
