Melissa Crosson Art Exhibit

View the work of Melissa Crosson, a local artist featured in ArtPop Street Gallery’s billboard project. Melissa will discuss her path as an artist and her work that was chosen as part of a national project. You can see Melissa’s work on display in the library during the month of May.

The Buzz about Beekeeping
with the Catawba Valley Beekeepers Association

Have you ever wondered how bees make and harvest honey, who’s who in the bee colony, the bees’ role as a pollinator, what bee hives look like up-close, and what tools beekeepers use to keep and care for bees? Join us for a buzz worthy exploration with the Catawba Valley Beekeepers Association and discover for yourself the art of beekeeping in this earth friendly pursuit that has many rewards for all. This program is recommended for all ages. Registration required.

Milkweed Seed Bombs

Make a nutrient-rich seed bomb filled with milkweed seeds to take home! Learn about the cold stratification process, monarch butterfly migration, and how to prep your seeds for planting. All ages. Registration required.

STEAM Explorers: Flower Dissection

Budding botanists are invited to visit the library to explore flowers through dissection. Learn about the insides of flowers in this hands-on program by examining the internal structures and studying their function. For children in grades K-5.

Calling all young entomologists to join us at the library to learn fascinating facts about bugs, beetles, pollinators, and more!  Then we’ll create stamps from recycled materials to create our own unique bug prints. For children in grades K-5.

Wearable Art Workshop with artist Melissa Crosson

Learn art techniques from local artist Melissa Crosson for creating your own fabric-based art projects from sneakers, to shirts, to canvas bags. In this workshop, we will be designing canvas bags but teens are welcome to bring in white canvas sneakers to design if interested. Canvas bags and paints are supplied by the library. For teens 13-18.Registration required.

Tai Chi on the Lawn

Join us for beginner’s Tai Chi every Wednesday with Diane Christensen from the Highland Rec Center.  Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner, accompanied by deep breathing to increase balance and flexibility. We will meet on the side lawn at the library. First come, first served.

Spring Foraging Workshop
Sat. | May 7 | 10am-12pm

Have you wanted to learn more about foraging and plant identification? Julie Mullis will teach a lecture style program with a focus on spring and early summer plant identification. She will bring samples as well as show pictures of different stages of plant growth and discuss preparation of foraged plants. Mullis has years of experience in outdoor and environmental education, including work with the National Parks Service. The program will conclude with a brief walk around the SALT Block to look for plants. Registration is required.

Senior Bingo & Brain Games

Join us at the library on the second Monday of each month for mind stimulating brain games and bingo. The emphasis of Senior Brain Games and Bingo is to have fun in a friendly environment. Our casual and relaxed pace makes it perfect for people of all playing levels. Bring friends or join us on your own and meet new people in our community.
