Winter Reading Bingo
Jan 1- Feb 28 | All Ages

Join the Hickory Public Library for a fun Winter Reading Bingo challenge. This all-ages bingo game is centered around winter activities, crafts, and of course reading! It’s easy to play! Sign up at the library’s Beanstack page at https://hickorync.beanstack.org/reader365, download a bingo card from Beanstack or pick up one from either branch of the Hickory Public Library, and get ready for a fun bingo game! When you have achieved bingo, visit the library for your prize - a free book from the Library Book Store.

Technology Tutoring
Get one-on-one lessons in using tablets, smartphones, e-books or other technology, at a time that fits your schedule. Just call 828-304-0500 to set up an appointment for an hour long session with a staff member. PBML
Story Time

Families with pre-school aged children are invited for stories and songs. A take-home craft will be provided for each child who attends. PBML
Black History Matching Game: I Did That!

Come join us for a matching game of our favorite products and the Black Americans who created it. You would be amazed to learn whose mind were behind such great products. RVBL
 
Galactic Quest with 4-H
Thurs. | Feb. 3, 10, 17 | 4:30 pm  

The Hickory Public Library and 4H of Catawba County invite youth to join the Galactic Quest. Galactic Quest explores the history of humans in space, the technology, and resources needed for missions, and the obstacles humans encounter in orbit. These STEM based activities range in topic from physics, engineering, computer science, and space agriculture. Registration is required as space is limited. You may register for individual sessions or all 3. Please look at recommended age range before registering. PBML
     Feb. 3 – Stellar Optics
Construct a simple mini-telescope and learn how it works and explore some common constellations. Ages 8-13. 
     Feb. 10 – Astro Adventures &  
        Cipher Space
Explore encryption and cybersecurity while discovering its importance on earth and space.  Learn about solar system resources as you play Astro Adventures. Ages 8-13. 
      Feb. 17 – Cosmic Claw 
Use engineering design to build, and create a model robotic claw. Ages 10-13. 
Bird Feeder Craft 
Fri. | Feb. 4 | 11 am

Celebrate National Bird Feeding Month in February by creating an upcycled bird feeder to hang outside your home. Decorate a repurposed tin can for a totally customized bird feeder. This program is for adults and youth ages 12+. All supplies provided. Registration is required. PBML
Pursuing the Life Well-Crafted with a Field Trip to Taste Full Beans

Join the library as we learn about local entrepreneurs and artists who are turning their passions into livelihoods and transforming their talents and skills into lives well-crafted.
Learn about the art of coffee. Join us for this all ages field trip that highlights the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).
We’ll meet at Taste Full Beans located at 29 2nd Street NW, Hickory, NC 28601. Space is limited. Please register. All ages.
SWAP: Sharing With A Passion – Art SWAP

Join the library for SWAP (Sharing with a Passion). This month we are going to swap art. Please bring in art. Any form; 2D, 3D, sculpture, found art, kitschy art, famous art, homemade art, art books, art supplies, and more. We will share a few open source art databases, talk about art collecting, and discuss the library’s developing makerspace-a place where we hope you will find tools and inspiration to create and learn! Embroidery 101: Heart Sampler

Join us at the library for an introduction to embroidery. We’ll focus on a simple heart shaped sampler to practice a few basic outline stitches and a few decorative stitches. All supplies are provided, but space is limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. RVBL
History of Western North Carolina Furniture

Join Professor Richard Eller for the fourth in a six-part series about the history of Western North Carolina furniture. The series will be held the second Tuesday each month through April. First come, first served. PBML
 
Bright Star Theater: Freedom Songs
Wed. | Feb. 9 | 4:30 pm

From the work songs of the fields of people who were enduring the bonds of slavery, to Ragtime, Jazz, R&B, and the inspired spirituals of the Civil Rights movement, this play follows the compelling story of the role that music played in the history of Black Americans. RVBL . 
Love Doesn’t Succ Terrariums

Seven Seed Soap Co.
Fri. | Feb. 11 | 10 am

Have you ever been curious about what it’s like to run your own shop? Featuring handmade soaps, candles, gifts and more, join us in a field trip to Seven Seed Soap Co., whom have been in Catawba County for over 20 years. Participants will learn firsthand about this business and watch the science and art of soap making.
We’ll meet at Seven Seed Soap located at 111 N College Ave, Newton, NC 28658. Space is limited so please register. All ages.
Trivia & Jingo

Self-Care Saturday for Teens

Spend the afternoon relaxing and learning some self-care techniques. Join us as we learn mindfulness exercises, color, and hang out with Chester the therapy dog! For ages 12-18. Registration is required.  PBML 
Senior Bingo and Brain Games

The Great Backyard Bird Count with Jean McAnulty (Virtual)

Join the library virtually as Jean McAnulty, a Catawba County Extension Certified Master Gardner, shares her love of birds. Ms. McAnulty will teach us about the Great Backyard Bird Count (February 18-21); a free and fun event open to all. You will enjoy McAnulty’s passion for birds, learn about different species, how to identify birds, and why birds are important for our ecosystem. Since this program is virtual, look out your own window as we talk, what birds do you see? All ages. Virtual
