Concert: Hermitage Piano Trio The Hermitage Piano Trio performs in the great Russian musical tradition and is distinguished by its exuberant musicality and interpretative range. Join us in the Main Library's Oak Room on May 1 from 7:00-8:00 pm for this concert, a collaboration with Music at Kohl Mansion. Funding support for this program is provided by the San Mateo Public Library Foundation.

Color printing now available Color printers are now located on every floor of the Main Library as well as Marina and Hillsdale branches. Color prints cost $.30 each, and your daily $.45 printing credit may be applied towards color prints.

May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month Celebrate with these events at the Main Branch of the San Mateo Public Library. May 3 at 7:00 pm: Tomb Treasures: New Discoveries from China's Han Dynasty. Docent-led talk about the SF Asian Art Museum's current exhibit. May 13 at 1:00 pm: Right of Passage, a documentary film chronicling Japanese-Americans' decades-long struggle for redress and reparations. May 21 at 1:30 pm: Eth-Noh-Tec with Nancy Wang and Robert Kiuchi-Yngojo. Music, movement, and storytelling. May 28 at 2:00 pm: Young People's Concert. Performances by students of Sumi Nagasawa.

Free Comic Book Day Join us on Saturday, May 6 for a celebration of comic books. Pick up a free comic book all day long--we'll have a variety of titles for all ages. From 10 am--noon, kids can drop in for crafts in the Oak Room. At 2 pm, tweens and teens from 5th-12th grade can register for "Cartooning in your Classroom", a free workshop by the Charles M. Schulz Museum that explores the art of cartooning and animation. (Call 650-522-7838 to register.)

Author Talk: Annie Barrows Join us on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:00 pm for an evening with Annie Barrows at the Frances Bohannon Nelson Children's Author Program. Author of the popular children's series Ivy and Bean as well as coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Ms. Barrows will speak, answer questions, and sign books. This program is made possible by the San Mateo Public Library Foundation and the Bohannon Foundation. |

Investment Basics Do you know the difference between a stock and a bond? What does it mean when the stock market moves up and down? On Wednesday, May 24 at 6:30 pm, Certified Financial Planners from the Silicon Valley Financial Planning Association present this free workshop to discuss general investment concepts and strategies.

Library Card Design Contest Children, teens, and adults are invited to design a new library card celebrating reading or libraries. Pick up an entry form at any San Mateo library or download the form and submit your creative design by May 31. One winner will be selected from each age group to receive an iPad, plus their design on new cards in September, during National Library Card Sign-up Month. One entry per person.

Reminder: 2-hr. limit in Main Library's garage Due to the increase in the number of library visitors since the grand opening (2006), the City will begin enforcing its 2-hour parking limit in the Main Library’s garage on May 1st. Parking at the Main Library will be reserved exclusively for library patrons and limited to two hours, Monday–Thursday from 8:00 am-6:00 pm, and Friday-Saturday from 8-5 pm. Please note that parking tickets will be issued to violators.

Call for Artists: 3D work The Library's Art Exhibit Selection Committee is seeking 3-Dimensional artwork that represents the diversity of our community, in varied artistic styles and mediums. Artwork will be displayed in the Library's Second Floor Display Case and at City Hall. The selection process will be for exhibits in 2018 and 2019. For more information and an application, consult our website or pick up an application in the Library. The deadline is Friday, May 26 at 5 pm.

Kids and Art: "Spring Hope" Kids & Art provides free, professional art workshops as part of an integrated treatment plan for families facing pediatric cancer. This exhibit features a variety of artworks by children ages 5-25 and is on display in the Main Library's First Floor Gallery from May 1 through June 30.

Mary Adam: Encaustic and Book Arts San Mateo artist Mary Adam works in photography, painting, printmaking and encaustic. Her display features several vibrant encaustic pieces on wood as well as two handmade art books. Her work is in the Second Floor Display Case from May 2 through June 30.
