Art Show of the Month
Andrew Dodge: Retrospective
Opening Reception
Sunday, September 10th, 3:00 - 5:00 pm

You are invited to attend the opening reception of Andrew Dodge: A Retrospective on Sunday, September 10th from 3 - 5pm at the Dennis P McHugh Piermont Public Library. The work will be on display throughout the month of September.
"Passionate mark-making;" "full of energy and creative expression;" "Free and bold;" and "impressive powers of observation." These are just some of the phrases that Andrew Dodge's teachers and visual arts mentors use to describe his work.
Andrew was born in 1993 and at the age of three diagnosed with Profound Autism. Hyperacusis makes him sensitive to certain sounds, loud noises, and different pitches. He also has apraxia of speech, which makes verbal communication difficult.
Since the age of three, art has become Andrew's primary form of expression,& communication. Primarily self-taught in his early years, he has been under the guidance of several local artists including Lauren Rudolph, Alice Mizrachi and Bill Batson.
The terms Outsider Art and Art Brut describe the passionate energy of Andrew's work. Art Brut was coined by French painter Jean Dubufett, meaning Raw Art. A Retrospective.
Retrospective offers a compilation of Andrew's work to date and demonstrates the power and sophistication of this prolific neurodivergent artist.

 Create and Sip for Adults
Barbie Movie Sets and Midcentury Modern Architecture of Palm Springs
Thursday, September 14th, 7:00 - 8:15 pm

Did you see the Barbie movie? Either way, we think you will love our next Create and Sip for Adults with Alexis Starke! This month, we will take inspiration from the fabulous sets from the Barbie movie and the midcentury modern architecture and landscape of Palm Springs, California. Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer, were inspired by Palm Springs for the film and you will be too! If you would like to treat yourself to some new art supplies, watercolor markers work great for this project, but you can use whatever materials you have- watercolors, colored pencils, regular markers all work great!

Each participant will receive a goody bag with chocolates, a mini bottle of wine, paper, and inspiration images. This is a live virtual class and participants are welcome to ask questions, exchange ideas, and share their work. Our projects are always designed to be relaxed and beginner friendly but fun for all levels.

Registration for Piermont patrons is open.  Registration for all opens on September 1st at 9:00 am.
United States of Friendship:
9/11 Pen Pals
Tuesday, September 5th, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

More than 20 years after the tragic events of 9/11/2001, school teachers Julie O’Connor and Elaine Mroczka reflect on the friendship that sparked national conversation and brought eight-year-olds together from hundreds of miles away. Shortly after the attacks, third graders in Illinois reached out to the traumatized children in New York City through a pen pal project and it was exactly the type of healing our nation craved! Unlikely friends, the two classes wrote to each other for an entire school year. May we all learn to be kind to others, just as these small-town students were to their inner-city pen pals. Featured in the New York Times, local newspapers, "The Kelly Clarkson Show", and the "Today Show", the children's patriotic example shows us what a difference caring can make in someone's life! Tenafly author Julie O'Connor, PhD, will discuss her book and the hope it elicits.  Dr. O'Connor serves on her town council and has been a teacher and instructional supervisor for over 20 years in both the New York City and Cliffside Park, N.J., public school systems.

As our library is named after fallen hero Dennis P. McHugh, and our building was made possible by the generosity of his family, programs of this nature are near to our hearts. We hope that you can join us for this virtual program.

Author Talk: Matthew Raidbard "Lead Like a Pro"
Tuesday, September 19th, 6:00 - 7:30 pm

This is a Zoom event.  With each passing year athletic coaches, at all levels of sports, are asked to take on increased leadership responsibilities for their athletes and team. However, they don’t always have the opportunity to receive the necessary coach-related leadership education and training that would provide them with the knowledge and tools required to effectively coach the team, manage the kids and parents, and deal with any unexpected conflicts or tensions that arise during the season. This talk is designed specifically for athletic coaches to provide them with foundational leadership knowledge and teach them techniques they can use to practice the best leadership style and behaviors that align with their personal values and beliefs.
