Janet Mandel Art Talk: Mary Cassatt: Impressionist Painter and Printmaker Friday, April 23rd, 7:00 pm Join us for a Janet Mandel Art Talk! Mary Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania but lived most of her adult life in France. She became acquainted with Edgar Degas, who introduced her to the Impressionist circle. Out of social necessity for an upper middle class, unmarried woman of her era, she mostly created images of the private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. But her treatment of her subjects was confident, original, and sometimes even radical.

Mario Medici Lectures: Carousels Then and Now Wednesday, April 28th, 7:00 - 8:30 pm Remember the thrill of riding a carousel with the horse bobbing up and down to the sound of the Wurlitzer Band or steam organ (calliope), or maybe if you are old enough catching the brass ring. There was a time when 5,000 carousels dotted the landscape of this country, now 150 remain. Where did they go? How did Coney Island go from 25 carousels to just one today? Who are the masters of this art form? What is the state of carousel production today? This presentation will take you from the earliest days of carousels until the present and attempt to answer these questions and more.
