Community News
National Friends of Libraries Week October 17th-23rd
This is a great opportunity to thank all the friends groups throughout the RCLS System. We are highligting the Sullivan County Democrat article featuring the friends of the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library which has a small, but mighty group of volunteers who fund raise, advocate, and support the library’s efforts to meet the needs of our community. Their fundraising efforts alone have provided a storage shed, podium with sound for our outdoor space, book packs for take out from the children’s room, engaging and interactive end panels for our youngest users, and so much more. They have raised thousands of dollars to better the library and, therefore, our community. They raise awareness at booths and stables supporting library services at community events throughout the year. All of us are better off as a result of their efforts.

Each year the Board of Trustees honors one of those hard working people. This year, instead of honoring an individual, we will be honoring the Friends of The Garden at our annual event on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 5:30 pm. Fittingly, this will be held in our beautiful outdoor space (weather permitting). The Friends of the Garden plant flowers, weed, mulch, and generally beautify this wonderfully inviting outdoor space.

Thomas Thorenz of Moffat Library awarded by NSDAR
An awards ceremony was held for Moffat Library Head of Reference Services and Local History Librarian Matthew Thorenz at the Library on Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

In recognition of his achievement, Mr. Thorenz was presented with two awards. The first was from the NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution). The second commendation came from Washingtonville Village Historian who awarded Mr. Thorenz with a Certificate of Achievement & Appreciation from the Village of Washingtonville for his contributions towards promoting the history of our area.

In June 2021 Arcadia Publishing & The History Press published Mr. Thorenz’s first book, “Images of America - Blooming Grove and Washingtonville.” Using photographs from Moffat Library’s archives and the collections of village and town historians as well as local residents, Mr. Thorenz tells the story of how our community was shaped. Copies of the book are available for sale at Moffat Library with the proceeds supporting our Friends Group. The price is $21.99.

We invite anyone interested in the history of Blooming Grove to attend Mr. Thorenz’s presentation on Wednesday, October 20th at 7:00 pm via zoom, where he will be doing a presentation on his new book. Call Moffat Library at (845) 496-5483 for more information.
