Get to know our new Youth Services Specialist - Rachael Purdy!
How long have you worked in Libraries?
I have worked with the Cobourg Public Library (CPL) in various roles since 2015.
Can you tell us a little bit about your Library career?
My library career began when I had the opportunity to work as the Summer Student for CPL in 2004. This provided me with an introduction to library work and sparked my interest in libraries. In 2015, I joined the Youth Services team at CPL. While working in Youth Services. I cultivated my passion for children’s literature and youth programming. I have also completed various duties including Circulation, Reference, and Branch Services through my role as a Public Services Associate before becoming the Youth Services Specialist.
How would you describe your job in one sentence?
The Youth Services Specialist is responsible for the children’s and teen collections at CPL, as well as programming for these demographics.
What is your favourite part of your work?
My favourite part of working at CPL, is meeting all of the wonderful youth and their families in our local community, and hearing how the library enriches their lives.
What is your favourite Library memory?
My personal favourite library memory is as a library patron. I fondly remember bringing my two children to participate in the Mother Goose program with the now retired Youth Services Specialist, Rhonda Perry. Meeting other families with young children in the community, while sharing milestones and sometimes challenges, was very reassuring as a new parent. Lasting friendships were developed. My children are still friends with children that we met through this wonderful program.
What is the most rewarding part of working @CobourgPL?
The most rewarding part of working at CPL is being able to support our community in so many different ways, without the expectation of cost for the service or program. Being part of a community gathering place where everyone is welcome is very important to me.
What is your favourite collection or service offered by @CobourgPL?
I really love all of the special collections here at CPL. From Discovery Backpacks, guitars, ukuleles, Lego Borrow and Build kits, Ontario Parks passes, seeds, to our telescopes, there is always something outside the usual expectation of books for our patrons to enjoy.
What is your favourite genre to read?
My favourite book genre is psychological thrillers.
What is your favourite book?
There are just too many books to pick one favourite!
