Forbes Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 in observation of Independence Day. We will reopen with usual hours on Wedbesday, July 5. Access to thousands of e-books and e-audiobooks as well as powerful research databases are still available from the library's website.
Reading Frederick Douglass Together brings people together to read aloud Frederick Douglass’s speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?
Copies of Douglass’ speech will be distributed to all in attendance, and members of the public will take turns reading passages from it in succession. You may simply attend or attend and read. The event is free and open to the public.
200 chairs will be available. Feel free to bring your own chair.
During the reading, the grounds are closed to dog walking. Certified service dogs only, please.
Join us to get creative and messy on the library lawn! We will have everything you need for an open-ended art project. This program is best suited for children ages 3+. In the event of bad weather, this program will be canceled.

Calling all young adventurers! We'll be hosting Dungeons & Dragons campaigns every other Thursday at 3:45. D&D is a great way for kids to practice collaboration, strategy, and storytelling, and we welcome participants of all experience levels. This program is for kids ages 9+, and is limited to six participants per session. Registration is necessary--call the Children's Desk at 413-587-1010 or visit us in person to sign up.
We need picture books, board books, chapter books and YA books! Donations can be brought to the Children's Department at Forbes.
In collaboration with Lilly Library, beautifully refurbished newspaper boxes provide children, teens and adults access to free books in their neighborhoods. Boxes are replenished weekly by staff and volunteers, assuring that they remain neat, clean and easily accessible. Help us to keep these book boxes thriving!
