CLOSED: Monday, September 4, 2023
Forbes Library will be closed on Monday, September 4, 2023 in observation of Labor Day. We will reopen with usual hours on Tuesday, September 5. Access to thousands of e-books and e-audiobooks as well as powerful research databases are still available from the library's website.
Attention: Crafters!
Forbes Library will have a team in the DoozyDo parade on September 23th at 11 AM. We hope you can join us in crafting, making music, and marching on this fun day!
Our theme for our parade team is "Forbes for All'' with a fun aquatic twist: we will create large and small flying fish puppets. Feel free to work with us on some puppets, banners, swirling streamers, props, or see where your inspiration leads you and come craft!
Crafting dates and times will be September 14 and September 21 from 3-6 pm on the Forbes library lawn.
DONATE SUPPLIES: If you would like to donate large pieces of cardboard, fabric, bamboo or other material for long, light poles, please bring it to the Children's Department during library hours.
MARCH WITH US! We will meet at the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley St at 10 AM on September 23th. Bring your puppets, noisemakers, and big energy. The march will begin at 11 AM. If you don't want to march, but would like to cheer us on, make yourself comfortable anywhere along the parade route.

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means to seize). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 6 live birds of prey, all native to New England, gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. Recommended for ages 6+.
This event is sponsored by the Brookline Bird Club.
Spend an hour with bestselling author Jeff Selingo, who immersed himself in the world of admissions for a year to answer the question on the minds of teenagers and their parents: how do colleges select their freshman class?
The result is his most recent book, Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions, named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2020 by the New York Times. For the book, Jeff was embedded in three admissions offices — the University of Washington, Emory University, and Davidson College — and follows a group of high-school seniors through the process and players behind the scenes, including the marketers, the financial-aid consultants, and the rankers.
In this conversation, Jeff will dispel the entrenched notions of how to compete and win at the admissions game, reveal why families have much to gain by broadening their notion of what qualifies as a “good” college, and explain how the pandemic impacts admissions.
