Every teacher knows that encyclopedias are an easy way to find a lot of reliable information. Did you know that we can give you access to Encyclopedia Britannica through Britannica Online? Pictures and videos along with clear, concise information make it a great way to help introduce a topic, or as a resource for students to use for some hands on research. You can choose to search through their Children, Young Adults, or Adult level Reference Center. Text difficulty and the depth of information covered increases with each level. Even after searching, it's easy to switch between the levels if more results are needed, or to limit by kind of resource returned in the search. By looking under "Research Tools and Materials," students can browse using pictures and maps, finding topics such as animals, biographies, science topics, and U.S. and World Geography. Each click provides more specific choices until an article is selected. All articles in the children's interface have a "read aloud" feature so that a student can hear the information if they need the support rather than just reading. It's perfect for younger students or ELL students. Britannica is a great way to get students started researching almost any topic. Discover Britannica Library for yourself by visiting our website at www.mchenrylibrary.org and going to the "Find It" menu or feel free to contact your school librarian for more details on how to excess this database in your classroom. We always love to hear your feedback on our featured databases or on how this database was used in your classroom.

Going back to school is always a time of transition from the comfort of home to the unknown beginnings of a new school year. Author Meggan Hill shares a tender story of Nico who is given the job of pet sitting his aunt's dog Lola. Nico too transitions from the fear of Lola to the comfort of embracing his new responsibility with kindness. The perfect read for the first days of school. This book lends itself to so many core value themes, from jump starting discussions on Bucket Fillers, to teaching the importance of Character Counts, students of all ages will find a personal connection with this book which reminds us all "Being kind is showing concern for others". Paxby Sara PennypackerAudience: 4th to 7th Bestselling author of the Clementine series Sarah Pennypacker packs a poignant punch with a very different kind of story. Pax pulls on the reader’s heartstrings and could be especially rewarding - or especially upsetting - for students who love animals. I strongly recommend reading it first before using it in a classroom to make the most of the book. Peter’s father forces him to abandon the pet fox he has raised himself because Peter must move in with his grandfather when his father goes off to war. Told in alternating perspectives from the boy and the fox, both decide that they have to regain the other, but meet many obstacles along the way. The tale is full of peril and the injustices of war, not only for the soldiers, but for the children left behind and the animals driven from their homes, both wild and domestic. The actual war that drives the action is left ambiguous - descriptions of people, objects and places make it seem modern, but no specific time period or location is given. It works well to make the story more universal - it could be any family in any war in any place. Pax has all the makings of a classic.
