Lola Goes to School
by Anna McQuinn
Illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw

It's Lola's first day of school! Find out how Lola gets ready for her big day, who she takes with her to school in her bag, and how her day goes. Cheerful, lively illustrations show diverse classmates doing fun activities at school. Adults will find this book perfect for starting conversations about going to preschool or kindergarten, and little ones will be reassured to find out what to expect on their big day.

Isabel and Her Colores Go to School
by Alexandra Alessandri
Illustrated by Courtney Dawson

Isabel speaks Spanish, and in the school she will go to, everyone speaks only English. English sounds so different to her ears. How will she talk to and enjoy time with her classmates, and understand what the teacher is saying? This bilingual picture book has side-by-side Spanish and English text, and the English narrative is woven with simple Spanish words that are easy to understand within the context of the story. The vibrant, colorful illustrations echo the roller coaster of emotions in the story, as Isabel realizes how her love of drawing can give her a wonderful and different way to communicate and make friends.

One World, One Day
by Barbara Kerley

Simple text and moving photographs show the daily routine in the lives of children all over the world, as they wake up, go to school, and spend time with their families. This book highlights the fact that kids in countries all around the world have days remarkably similar to each other! Wonderful backmatter gives us the location where each photo was taken, and may include an interesting photographer's note.

Hummingbird, Tiny Super Star
It’s a flash of green and purple. It’s a raspy warble outside the window…
It’s “Hummingbird, Tiny Super Star”!

What else could stuff so much power and attitude into such a tiny package?

Come to the 4th floor of the Central Library to enjoy a fun interactive display, a tribute to the smallest of birds.

*Did you know that female hummingbirds stitch together fluff with spider web to build their nests? They then decorate the outside with moss and lichen as an antiseptic and as camouflage. Hummingbirds are amazing! Find out more at Berkeley Public Library.
