Update for the week of April 2, 2021
Message from the Director
Hi Everyone,

Everything is going really well with this Outbreak!! We are so thankful for all of your support. We continue to have no new cases among staff and residents. Cedar Grove residents were re-tested on March 30 and all results are again negative!!! Residents on Cedar Grove will unfortunately have to have one more swab early next week as well.

You will note that the activity calendar in this newsletter is a little different this week as we are not able to have large or small group activities during the outbreak. Don’t worry though, there will definitely not be a shortage of creativity to socially support the residents! Unfortunately, residents are not able to leave their Home area or go out for any outings (except high emergency medical appointments) while we are in Outbreak.  Please remember that zoom is an option for you to have a virtual visit with your loved one.
There have been many questions asking about the staff members vaccination status. This is a matter of personal health information that won’t be disclosed. As we are all aware, the COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory for any Canadian and we all need to be respectful and kind to one another while we all make these very personal decisions of whether or not we want to have the COVID-19 vaccine. Our decision will no doubt be based on a number of factors including our own personal pre-existing health conditions, health history, and household risk factors such as others we live with who have compromised immune systems. It is important to remember that an individual’s vaccination status does not result in 100% immunity to COVID-19. The vaccine substantially reduces the serious symptoms related to COVID-19 including the need for hospitalization. The vaccine does have good coverage against the UK Variant of Concern but is far less effective against the African Variant of Concern. I would encourage you to reach out to the KFLA Public Health vaccination support line        1-800-267-7875 ext 1451 to assist you in obtaining factual information to help you with your own decision making related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Thank you to the Essential Caregivers who have reached out to let us know of their vaccination status. If you haven’t done this yet, we would really appreciate it if you could let us know when you have had your first COVID-19 Vaccine dose. If you could please contact your point of contact person who is connected to your residents home area. The contact person is outlined in the chart found later in this newsletter.

Please check out Emily’s Infection Control section later in this newsletter for the following:

A reminder and explanation on how to use the masks with visors as many are finding these frustrating to keep up on their face.

Also a reminder on how and when to remove the gowns for the Essential Caregivers on Cedar Grove.

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext. 7224.

COVID-19 Testing for Essential Caregivers
You are required to have 2 COVID tests each week.

You will need your regular COVID swab that you have at a COVID Assessment Centre which you will need to have at some point between Wednesday and Sunday each week.

The second swab is the Rapid Antigen Test which will be done at JMPC. We will only be offering this test on Monday’s and Tuesday’s at the times listed below:

9:00am – 10:45am
1:00pm – 3:30pm
6:00pm – 7:00pm

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff.
Shift change that occurs during testing times are 2:30 and 6:30pm

Exception: If you visit only once per week then you only require the one weekly COVID swab from the COVID Assessment Centre.

The Rapid Antigen Test must be done here at JMPC and will take place in the tea room area. Staff will provide you direction at the time. This test is strictly a surveillance screening test for those who present without symptoms. It is viewed as an addition to the screening tool process.
Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.

Perishable Items: Food being brought in for a resident must be in a container that can be wiped down with our wipes and they will then be delivered to your resident right away.

All other items will be kept for 24 hours prior to being taken to the resident.

Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building

A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

Infection Control from the Desk of Emily Sarley
For Essential Caregivers going onto Cedar Grove, you do need to wear an isolation gown.  This will be provided to you at the screening desk.  Please put this on at that time and leave it on until you are leaving. Upon exiting the residents room, please remove only your gown and put it in the nearest garbage located in the hallway prior to leaving the Home area.

Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiver prior to their visit in order to be permitted into the Home.

Should the resident/POA wish to change an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted in advance.
