Update for the week of March 26, 2021
Message from the Director
Hi Everyone,

I am very sad to report to you that last night a JMPC staff member tested positive for COVID 19. This staff member works full time on the Cedar Grove home area which is on the 2nd floor of our Home.  Thankfully, the symptoms are mild and we hope for a full recovery.

We are very mindful of the great timing for our residents in terms of their 2nd vaccine dose!  Approximately 94% have had their full vaccination status for over 2 weeks now meaning they are fully protected!!

This is what we have done so far:
  • KFLA Public Health (PH) contacted us last night to advise of the positive test.
  • KFLA PH directed us to swab all residents on Cedar Grove right away which was completed Thursday evening (last night).
  • We used the Clorox disinfecting machine throughout Cedar Grove and in all common areas as well as staff break areas Thursday evening. This will be redone again Friday morning.
  • Contact tracing will begin Friday morning by KFLA PH staff.
  • Essential Caregivers for the Home are reduced to only one per resident throughout the entire home. (residents choice where possible)
  • No general visitors at all until further notice.
  • All powers of attorney for care on Cedar Grove are being contacted Friday morning to be provided information.
  • Residents will not be able to leave their Home Area. Doors to each RHA will remain closed until all swab results have been received. This will give us a baseline to know where our residents are at.
  • Today, we have gathered the data from our screening system as to when and who has been in our building, and who they have visited. This is both for general visitors and essential caregivers.  This information has been provided to Public Health.
  • We have provided Public Health with the information of staff presence in the building (dates and locations) as well as provided them with break room data.
  • We have also provided Public Health with the swabbing information as to the Rapid Antigen and PCR tests for both staff, essential caregivers and general visitors.
  • At the direction of Public Health today (Mar 26), ALL staff and residents will be swabbed today for COVID 19.
  • All residents will be served their meals in their room until further notice. The nightstands in each residents room all have a tray that pulls out that we will use to put their meal on.  We have purchased plate covers already to keep residents food warm
What has changed for Essential Caregivers?
  • All essential caregivers going to Cedar Grove must wear FULL PPE. This means gown, mask with eye shield which we will provide.
  • All essential caregivers going to all other Home Areas must wear a mask with eye protection which we will provide.
  • Only one essential caregiver per resident
  • If you are coming in, it would be very helpful if you could come in over the meal time while everyone must be eating in their bedrooms.
  • No leave of absences for residents until at least Monday.  More information on this will be in Monday’s newsletter.
I will release a Special Newsletter on Monday March 29 to provide you with an update and keep you informed of how things are progressing.

Thank you to the Essential Caregivers who have reached out to let us know of their vaccination status. If you haven’t done this yet, we would really appreciate it if you could let us know when you have had your first COVID-19 Vaccine dose. If you could please contact your point of contact person who is connected to your residents home area. The contact person is outlined in the chart found later in this newsletter. We are really hoping to meet the KFLA Public Health goal of 90 – 90 – 90.  This means 90% of the residents, 90% of the essential caregivers and 90% of the staff vaccinated.

As a result of a suggestion from Family Council, we have created a screening pass ticket for Essential Caregivers who are stepping out for up to one hour after already having went through the screening process on the same day.  Simply let the screener know as you exit that you plan to return to the Home within the hour and this ticket will be given to you to save you from going through the screening process again.

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext. 7224.

Question of the Day
Who is going to contact me or should I book my own 2nd dose of COVID vaccine?

We have been advised by KFLA Public Health this week that they will be contacting those of you who had their first vaccine dose at the Strathcona Paper Center prior to March 15 in order to book the second vaccine dose. They are unlikely to reach out to you until the end of May though to book your appointment.

For those who had their first dose in Kingston, had their second dose booked but subsequently cancelled, KFLA Public Health will also be contacting you by phone or text to rebook your second dose. Again, they are unlikely to reach out to you to book  until the end of May.

COVID-19 Testing for Essential Caregivers
You are required to have 2 COVID tests each week.

You will need your regular COVID swab that you have at a COVID Assessment Centre which you will need to have at some point between Wednesday and Sunday each week.

The second swab is the Rapid Antigen Test which will be done at JMPC. We will only be offering this test on Monday’s and Tuesday’s at the times listed below:

9:00am – 10:45am
1:00pm – 3:30pm
6:00pm – 7:00pm

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff.
Shift change that occurs during testing times are 2:30 and 6:30pm

Exception: If you visit only once per week then you only require the one weekly COVID swab from the COVID Assessment Centre.

The Rapid Antigen Test must be done here at JMPC and will take place in the tea room area. Staff will provide you direction at the time. General Visitors need to wait for their test results before they can see the person they have come to visit. The results of the rapid antigen test, are confirmed in 15 minutes. This test is strictly a surveillance screening test for those who present without symptoms. It is viewed as an addition to the screening tool process.

Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.

Further, for general visitors, the Ministry requires that you must not have any access to a resident until the rapid antigen testing results are confirmed. We have a waiting area in a portion of the tea room as you await your test results (this procedure will take approximately 20 min).

Helpline for caregivers in distress

If you are a caregiver and are in need of support, you can contact the

Ontario Caregiver Helpline: 1-833-416-2273 (CARE).

The only resource of its kind in Ontario, the helpline is available to all caregivers – regardless of age, diagnosis or where they live. It provides 24/7 support because caregiving is not a 9-5 job. The Live Chat is also available 7am – 9pm (Mon – Fri).

The Ontario Caregiver Helpline is answered by professional Community Resource Specialists in English and French. Helpline representatives have been trained by caregivers to understand the unique needs of caregivers.

Perishable Items: Food being brought in for a resident must be in a container that can be wiped down with our wipes and they will then be delivered to your resident right away.

All other items will be kept for 24 hours prior to being taken to the resident.

Memory Box

Memory boxes can be a great way to link a person to what they love from their past, helping to restore a person's identity. Some reasons memory boxes are useful:
  • Helps to recall fond memories of youth, interests, children or history
  • Inspires conversation with caregivers, children or grandchildren
  • Exercises touch and other sensory stimulation\n• Gains more insight to your loved one
Supplies:
REQUIRED:
  • Box or container that you have at home or something like this Unfinished Wood Cornice Box with Hinged Lid for Arts, Crafts, Hobbies and Home Storage
OPTIONAL:
  • Fabric or wrapping paper to decorate the box.
  • Tape or glue.
  • Accessories to decorate (for example, game pieces from well-loved games or candy packaging from well-loved candy).
Instructions:
Help your loved one create a box of memories they can enjoy on a regular basis. When you search for keepsakes, you may find special items you did not realize the senior still had. You can put anything you like in a memory box.  If your loved one is able, it is encouraged that he or she participates in the selection of items. You can use any style of box and even make an additional project out of decorating it.

Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building

A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view.  You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiver prior to their visit in order to be permitted into the Home.

Should the resident/POA wish to change an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted in advance.

Essential Caregivers
To avoid Essential Care Givers having to go through the screening if they just have to leave the home for under an hour can ask for a ticket from screener at the front and simply show when they return

Concerns about keeping loved ones engaged in their room during a visit
We surveyed other homes. JMPC is in the column with majority of the homes on the sheet. The other issue KLFA numbers are going up. More variants of concern in our outbreak than the provincial average. This has added to the fear and critical that all safety protocols remain in place at this time

Can we walk with our loved one in the hallway?
The Health unit was very clear- do not change protocols with the variants in our area. It is the paramount for all 168 residents that Covid not get into the home
Not everyone who is coming in as an essential caregiver are following rules, ex. Going in the common room, getting too close in the hallways. We can’t make a rule for LK as there are similar issues on other home areas. Residents can be very stressed by the restrictions placed on them.  At this point we will not see a change. As more people get vaccinated and cases go down everyone hopes this will change and are committed to doing so when there is no risk

Can we access the courtyards?
JMPC is looking into this request

Making Birdhouses
This is the finished design that we used our birdhouses for in Lilac Knoll.
Thanks to Julie (works at the screening desk) who used her painting skills to paint the trees for us.
Intergenerational Program
This program was about the Titanic, as next month is the anniversary of this tragedy. We talked about the disaster and history of the titanic. Residents had the opportunity to ask Gail’s (activity aide) grandson Memphis, trivia questions about Titanic on zoom. Residents loved the interaction and were quite impressed with Memphis’ knowledge on the topic.
