What happens: When two former colleagues turn up at his door with questions about a decades-old case, one that has haunted him for years, recently retired policeman Tom Kettle finds himself pulled into the darkest currents of his past.

Read it for: "words are well chosen, the sentences [that] dazzle, ... a beautifully told, piercingly sad story." (Library Journal).

In the lives of puppets

What it's about: When an unwitting act of betrayal leads to the capture of his android Gio, who once hunted humans, Victor Lawson and his assembled family must journey across an unforgiving and otherworldly country to the City of Electric Dreams to rescue Gio from decommission, or worse, reprogramming. 

Read it for: a fantasy that mixes the vibe of  The Adventures of Pinocchio, and the Swiss Family Robinson with Wall-E.
