Happy Bookers Discussion Group: When Breath Becomes Air Wednesday, February 22, 7:00pm At the age of 36, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.

I came across a Valentine’s version of churros, which I thought was too cute to not try. However, I am not a fan of frying foods, so I baked mine instead. They puffed up nicely and were crispy and delicious. And it is such a quick dessert. The second time I made them, it took less than an hour from start to finish. The recipe is just the basic recipe. The only thing I did differently was to divide the dough into two parts and dye one half red. And instead of piping the dough in strips I made X’s and O’s and hearts. They were a fun dessert and I will be making them again. Soon. these recipes!
