Spotlight on Friends of the Library
We wish a happy and healthy new year to all our library members and community partners. We had our challenges in 2019 (I’m looking at you, roof!) but we also had our share of happy successes. We introduced our new children’s play area through a grant from Iron Pigs Charities. We also debuted mobile hotspots for borrowing, a Seed exchange, and a new, family-friendly museum pass program, all thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Phillipsburg Free Public Library. Who are the Friends and what do they do? They are community members who love our Library and through their fundraising and volunteer activities enhance our services for children and adults. Last year, besides funding the new collections noted above, they also sponsored popular programs like Behind the Scenes at the Lion King, the History of Motown, and a slew of hands-on arts programs in partnership with the Phillipsburg Area Arts Community. They run our two annual book sales which raise money for the Library and allow our community to find great books at great prices. You can help the Friends support the library by becoming a member. Your membership dues (as low as $10/year!) are an important funding source that allows the Friends’ work to continue. All funds raised by the Friends stay right here in Phillipsburg, to support the work of our hometown library. Whether you want to be an active volunteer or a quiet supporter is up to you. We love all our Friends!

Happy Bookers: The Life We Bury Wednesday, January 22, 7:00pm College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe’s life is ever the same. Iverson is a dying Vietnam veteran–and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder. As Joe writes about Carl’s life, especially Carl’s valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Multiple copies of the book are available for reserve. See the Happy Bookers website for more information.
