Happy Bookers Discussion Group: Wolf Hall Wednesday, September 22, 7:00pm England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

SAVE THE DATE: Classic Book Club Tuesday, October 12, 7:00pm “Classic” books are classic for a reason – their literary excellence transcends passing fads, and they continue to engage readers generation after generation. If there are classics you have always meant to read “someday,” or if you read them in school before you were ready to appreciate them, now is the time to enjoy them with other adult readers.
This month we're reading Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.

As summer comes to an end, I find myself remembering my mom making jam and canning peaches. It’s something I enjoy doing because of the connection to her. If you’ve never tried it because it’s hard or it takes too long, we have several books to help you discover the joy of preserving your own jam. Or pickles. Or salsa. There are so many options to enjoy the flavors of summer. Two of my favorites are Well Preserved by Mary Anne Dragan and Foolproof Preserving by America’s Test Kitchen. Both of these focus on preserving small batches, which is a good way to test out a new technique. I really like that the Classic Peach Jam in Foolproof Preserving doesn’t require peeling the peaches. This takes away a lot of the work and all of the mess. The Black and Blue Jam from Well Preserved is something different and very simple. There is something very satisfying about preserving the fruits of your labor. And the “pop” of a sealed jar of jam is one of the happiest sounds in the kitchen. the recipe!
