PIANIST MARGARET WACYK ON BEETHOVEN AND WHAT WE MIGHT LEARN FROM HIM.

Our Margaret plays Beethoven, late Beethoven works, beautiful and moving ones, composed in a time when he had become completely deaf. Her motivational theme is how we ourselves might capture and harness the hidden benefits of silent moments in our lives, as Beethoven did. When we, like he, stop for a time listening "outside" and turn our ears "inside, developing deeper skills that can improve our body, mind and emotions. Don't miss Margaret's double barreled performance!

VIRTUAL AUTHOR TALK – Japanese American Experiences at Seabrook Farms, 1944-1947

Tues, May 7 @ 12PM - 1PM

A canning and frozen-foods agribusiness in Cumberland County, New Jersey, during the Second World War, Seabrook Farms employed 7,000 laborers in its fields, plants, offices, and warehouses, and processed produce from more than 50,000 acres of farmland. In 1944, Seabrook Farms began recruiting incarcerated Japanese Americans from camps, and by the end of 1946, more than 2,500 Issei (Japanese immigrants) and Nisei (American-born citizens of Japanese descent) lived in company housing and worked on vegetable sorting, cleaning, and packaging lines in the plant. This talk will explore Seabrook Farms as a New Jersey site of Asian American history, and, from Professor Andy Urban’s research for his book in progress, highlight Japanese American experiences at Seabrook Farms that have not garnered significant attention or featured as part of Seabrook Farms’ collective public memory. In particular, he will focus on a group of three hundred “renunciants” who were sent to Seabrook Farms in the fall of 1946, and detained there under what the U.S. Department of Justice called “relaxed internment.” Urban will examine the renunciants’ fight to be avoid deportation, and their longer battle to have their American citizenship restored – and how Seabrook Farms factors into this unique history.

Andy Urban is an Associate Professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. His research, scholarship, teaching, and public humanities work focus on labor, migration, and public memory. Andy’s current book project explores the history of Seabrook Farms, an agribusiness in southern New Jersey that recruited and employed incarcerated Japanese Americans, guestworkers from the British West Indies, migrant farmworkers from the US South, European Displaced Persons, and stateless Japanese Peruvians during the 1940s and 1950s. His opinion pieces have appeared in the Journal of Asian American Studies, Journal of American Ethnic History and Journal of American History.

The Time to Hear is Here™

Thur, May 23 @ 12PM - 1PM

A vast majority of adults will develop hearing-related issues as they age, the most common being diminished hearing. However, it can be very difficult for the elderly to receive the proper care to address their hearing issues by relying on Medicare alone. Please join us as Ron Gottardi from The Time to Hear is Here™ will help bring clarity to managing hearing loss, including surprising new data on the prevalence of hearing problems among the elderly, why health insurance, including Medicare, should cover hearing aids, and remarkable new advances in hearing technology.*

Ron Gottardi, volunteer for the 501(c)3 designated charitable group The Time to Hear is Here™, is a consultant, educator, researcher, and public speaker. Gottardi has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rutgers and Temple Universities and was an adjunct Associate Professor at Drexel University. His areas of interest/specialty include management science, technology, and finance.

*This presentation is not an attempt to sell any product or service, particularly hearing aids. Against All Flags (1952)

May 7
(1952) (84 min.) Not Rated

Errol Flynn stars in this high adventure swashbuckling pirate film.  He is a British Navy sailor who is pretending to be a deserter to infiltrate a pirate stronghold that is giving the British trouble.  Maureen O’Hara is a pirate called Spitfire Stevens and Anthony Quinn is here too as a suspicious and unsavory pirate.  It is a greatly entertaining romp.
Ruggles of Red Gap (1935)

May 14
(1935) (90 min.) Not Rated

The magnificent Charles Laughton stars as a very proper British butler whose aristocratic employer loses him in a poker game to a wily American with a social climbing wife.  It is one of those fish out of water scenarios but it is such fun to watch.  Also starring Charles Ruggles, Mary Boland, and Roland Young.
Deception (1946)

May 21
(1946) (90 min.) Not Rated

Bette Davis shines in this dramatic film set in the world of classical music.  Claude Rains is a composer and Pail Henreid is a cellist and they both love Bette.  Besides the top-notch cast there is also beautiful classical music.
Anna and the King of Siam (1946)

May 28
(1946) (128 min.) Not Rated

This film is a charming drama about the relationship of an Asian king and the British woman he hires as a teacher for his many children.  Based on a true story, this film stars Irene Dunne as Anna and Rex Harrison as the King of Siam.  The film also features Linda Darnell, Gale Sondergaard, and Lee J. Cobb. Directed by John Cromwell.

Next Goal Wins

May 10
(2023) (104 min.)  Rated PG-13

Michael Fassbender stars as a beleaguered soccer coach who is forced to take on the job of coaching the admittedly awful American Samoa National  soccer team. This sport comedy-drama is based on a true story.
Mean Girls

May 17
(2024) (112min.) Rated PG-13

This film is a new adaptation of the original movie which is based on the Broadway musical. The  new cast includes  Renee Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, and, of course, Tina Fey. We all go back to high school in this one.
Lancaster

May 24
(2022) (110 min.) Not Rated    DOCUMENTARY

This excellent documentary details the story of the World War II Lancaster bombers and the men who flew on them.  The cinematography is superb and this film will take you back to the Battle of Britain and the sacrifices made by many young men to defeat fascism.
