In a few months the Friends of the Richards Memorial Library will start planning its annual book sale. This is the Friends’ biggest single fundraiser and helps to pay for the programs for both children and adults here at the library. It also supports the popular pass program. This sale and the benefits derived from it would not be possible without the generosity of the residents of the town and their donated books. The library will start collecting books in June for the sale in September. This gives the Friends time to sort the stock. All of that work needs to be done off site because the library has no room for it. If you feel moved to donate books, we thank you in advance. But if you can wait until June to do it, that would be even better. Again, thank you for the support that you show this library.

Town-Wide Read: Hidden Figures Events
This year the Town-Wide Read is Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures. This book explores the lives of several African-American women who became "computers" with the Virginia group that would become NASA. These women faced incredible odds against them for both their race and gender. As technology becomes such an integral part of our lives, it's important for us to encourage all children to learn what are called the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math.) We have programs throughout the month to encourage this interest. Visit the website RMLonline.org/hidden-figures for full descriptions. - At the Library on Wednesday, Mar. 7, at 6:30 pm: The Space Race: Race for the Moon. This is a presentation by the Bridgewater State Observatory Curator. Appropriate for upper elementary through adults. Reservations required.
- At the Library, Thursday, Mar. 15, at 7 pm: Death Dive to Saturn. This NOVA television program features several women who worked on the Cassini probe.
- At the North Attleboro Middle School Cafetorium, Wednesday, Mar. 21, at 6:30 pm: Supporting Success in Science and Technology. There will a panel discussion by people in the fields as well as exhibits by groups supporting children in STEM.
- At the Chorney Property on Ellis Road, NA, Friday, Mar. 23, at 7:30 pm: Moon-Viewing Party. Andy Galasso of the S. New England Astronomical Society will lead us in viewing the moon and stars through telescopes. Appropriate for all. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Hidden Figures, the book and the film, demonstrate the importance of the contributions of all persons, regardless of gender or race. The children's department is suggesting we read Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea by Robert Burleigh and The Doctor with an Eye for Eyes by Julia Finley Mosca, books about two amazing scientists who happen to be women who overcame the bias of society to make important discoveries which changed the way we understand the world and how well we see. There will be two Fun with Math programs, Wednesday, Mar. 7, and Wednesday, Mar. 21, both at 3:30 pm, for kids 9 years old and older, On Saturday, Mar. 17, at 10 am, we will be building and learning to use Foldscopes which are pocket-sized, portable microscopes, also for kids 9 years old and older. The foldscope building involves origami skills, so this is really a STEAM event involving, science, technology, engineering, art and math. Registration for these programs is required and begins on March 1. We will have a drop-in program on Saturday, Mar. 24, from 10 am to 1 pm featuring Legos and the Women of NASA Lego figures. Help design a space scene for these amazing women.

You Can Now Borrow Puzzles from the Library
We have begun to add a small number of jigsaw puzzles to our collection. The puzzles have been donated. We have puzzles with 300, 500/550, 750 and 1000 pieces. Choose the puzzle you want from our puzzle binder and then we will get the puzzle for you to take out. They can be checked out for 2 weeks with one renewal. We ask that you return them only to our library and if a piece gets lost to tell us. Once there are more than 2 pieces lost, we will just replace the puzzle with a new donation.

You Can Join the RML Fan Club
In addition to the Friends of the Library Facebook page, there is now a Richards Memorial Library Fan Club Facebook page. It's a "closed" group so you need to get accepted by the moderator to view. This will have posts about different events at the library and around town.
