The library has now been open since June 22. Things are going well. People are being cautious and that is important right now. Overall, there has been very high compliance with wearing masks and filling out the contact tracing log. Fortunately, after five weeks of renewed operations, we haven’t needed to use the contact tracing log, and I have already shredded the first week’s entry because it’s now irrelevant. In the near future the library should have shields installed on the public computers in the reference room that will allow us to open two more workstations to the public. There will also be hands-free hand sanitizer stations at several points inside the building. We are glad to be back in business and look forward to serving you.

In this time of uncertainty and social distancing, the Friends of Richards Memorial Library have voted to suspend our annual membership and dues drive and automatically extend all memberships until spring of 2021. We also voted to cancel our annual Book Sale, our major fundraiser, this year. In the meantime we will still accept book donations at Allen Avenue School by appointment only. Please use the email: friendsofrml118@gmail.com and indicate the quantity and type of books you would like to donate. Please include a name and a phone number. Someone will get back to you in a timely fashion and make arrangements. We will continue our mission to help the Library with its diminished budget as best we can on a limited budget. If anyone wishes to mail a monetary donation or drop off an envelope at the Library, that will be greatly appreciated. The address for Richards Memorial Library is 118 North Washington Street, North Attleborough, MA 02760. Please stay safe and healthy and we look forward to seeing you when we know what our new “normal” will be.

The deadline for recording your books for the Summer Reading drawing is August 14. The drawing for raffle prizes will be on August 15. Ed the Wizard's Alchemy Laboratory program, where Harry Potter magic meets science, will be available until late August. Just go to the link on our website. Aakash Sunkari has volunteered to present STEM programs for families to work on using supplies most have at home. Please check our website or our Facebook page and "tune in" to these opportunities this summer. The latest program is a "Popsicle Stick Crossbow." Miss Meredith and Miss Eunice will continue to present story times online. We will be offering some story times for older kids as well as for the preschool set. Please check them out; it is amazing what we can learn from reading a "sophisticated picture book!"

On Thursday, August 6, at 7 pm, we again will have a Zoom program with Janine Cavanaugh. It’s easy to get attached to our possessions. We tend to form sentimental bonds to the things we purchase for ourselves, the gifts we receive, and the items we inherit from others. As the stuff we own multiplies, we may start to feel overwhelmed by the quantity and clutter. This workshop presents ideas on how to let go of all that is no longer relevant or important. Come learn how to Keep the Memories but Get Rid of the Stuff. Email mholmes@sailsinc.org and you will be sent the information to sign into this Zoom program. For our August Afternoon Book Discussion we are reading fiction books by Black Authors (modern if possible.) This will give us a chance to try new authors who we may not have considered reading before. Here's a list of suggestions. We are planning to meet at Allen Avenue School at 1:00 on Tuesday, August 11. If you would like to join us, bring your own chair.

When you log into the SAILS Catalog, you will find a sidebar that has links to specialized lists. I have added to the Richards Memorial links to our Upcoming Bestseller lists and our DVD lists. Below that are the lists generated by SAILS which include a list of new books and a list of new Videos that include ones other libraries have ordered. If you haven't tried this, now may be a good time! Recorded Books is now owned by the same company as OverDrive/Libby. That means that we will be able to offer some of the excellent audio books by Recorded Books readers for electronic downloads. We are still purchasing the CD versions as well.
