It is with profound sadness that everyone associated with the Richards Memorial Library notes the death of Samuel “Mac” McLanahan in early December. In our library circle he was always known as Sam, and he was a cherished friend and trustee. Sam joined the Board of Trustees in 2006 after several years of valuable service on the board of the Friends of RML. During his tenure with the Friends he introduced the very popular “Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate” tastings that were a very successful fundraiser for the Friends for several years. As a trustee, Sam provided valuable leadership, both as a member and as board chair. He was a valued mentor, offering excellent advice and perspective. It’s a measure of Sam's talents that his contribution to us, valuable as it was, is only a chapter in his many accomplishments. Among the greatest of these -- after his children (and “bonus” children, the young talents that he and his wife, Rae Ann fostered) -- were in the world of folk music and the co-founding of the Rose Garden Coffee House in Mansfield. Our condolences to Rae Ann and all of Sam's family. Memories of Sam will always bring a smile to our lips and console us in our sadness.

The Richards Memorial Library is offering “curbside service” to patrons of any age who have an infirmity (this includes those who are temporarily disabled due to an illness or operation.) Patrons would be able to place holds on books, dvds, or any library item. When the items are ready for pickup, the patron can call the library to alert them that they, or the person they designate, are driving over to pick up the items. A library staff member will check out the items and bring the items to the patron’s car. The patron can also return library items at that time. To arrange for this service, please call Ellen at 508-699-0122, Tuesdays through Friday from 9:30 to 5 pm.
