Kwanzaa Celebration Thursday, December 28, 6:00 pm Join us for a traditional Kwanzaa celebration that may include a variety of songs, dances, African drumming, storytelling, spoken word, poetry and a film. The Kwanzaa cultural symbols that represent values and concepts of this seven day holiday will be available for viewing. Kwanzaa derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza," means "first fruits" in Ki-Swahili. The seven principles of Kwanzaa (NguzoSaba in Swahili) reflects cultural values: Umoja - unity, Kujichagulia - self determination,Ujima - collective work and responsibility, Ujamaa - cooperative economics, Nia - purpose, Kuumba - creativity, and Imani - faith. Light refreshments will be available. This educational program will be facilitated by Zarinah Shakir - Producer/Host, Perspectives of Interfaith television. Registration is suggested. Concert with Presley & Melody: Rockin’ Winter Wonderland! Monday, December 4, 10:00 am For ages 6 and under, with a caregiver. Siblings and families are welcome. A large Lawrence school group will also be in attendance. As Songwriters/Musicians, Presley and Melody write it - compose it - sing it and “rock out” at their concerts, providing non-stop dancing and upbeat children’s music. The instantaneous audience connection transforms fans from “spectators to participators” as children become “Stars on Stage” in this creative concert experience. Online registration is required, starting at 7am the day of the program (12/4). A large Lawrence school group will be in attendance for this show. Additional space is limited. Preference may be give to patrons with a valid MCLS library card. On the day of the show, patrons who have not registered may be admitted if space permits.
