Black History Month Presentation: The Education of Fannie Sherrod Thursday, February 28, 7:00 pm From the moment enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas, sold and kept as chattel for free labor, the act of re-educating them was fraught with fierce opposition, anger and fear. In his talk entitled, The Education of Fannie Sherrod, historian and Sherrod descendent, Al Corbett, discusses the history and struggle to educate African-Americans pre and post Civil War. Through an exploration of his family history, Corbett explains the evolving role religious communities had in educating America’s enslaved and freed populations. Registration is suggested. Learn about Sound and Music for kids 5-11 years Saturday, February 16, 3:00 - 3:45 pm For ages 5-11 years with a caregiver. In the Lawrence children's activity room. Sound is all around us and is part of our life – but do you know how it actually works? How does it get from the noise maker to our ears? What’s the difference between high pitched & low pitched musical notes? Why does a piano sound different than a guitar playing the same note? What does sound actually look like? Presenter Rich Chernock will explain at a basic level the answers to the questions above and use tools (oscilloscope, frequency generator and synthesizer) to create sounds, see what the sounds actually look like and recreate the sounds of different musical instruments. Time permitting, there will be a limited amount of hands-on experience. About Rich Chernock: Rich lives in Lawrenceville and has recently retired from a local technology company, where he was the Chief Science Officer. He has a Doctor of Science degree from MIT in the field of Nuclear Materials Engineering. The first half of his career was at IBM, where he did electron microscopy analysis of advanced materials for computers. The second half was in Digital Television, culminating in leading the development of the next generation of Broadcast TV technology. Side activities include electronics, building and playing musical instruments, audio systems and woodworking. Registration is required, beginning at 7:00am on the day of the program. PlayFest Auditions Wednesday, February 27, 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 2, 1:00 - 4:00 pm and Monday, March 4, 6:00 - 8:00 pm The Lawrence Headquarters Branch Library is hosting PlayFest, its annual one-act play festival, on Saturday April 27, 2019. The Festival directors are seeking actors to fill a variety of roles in the staged readings from the selected works of local playwrights. The audition consists of a cold reading from selected scripts and will be held at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch. TrashedArt Contest Entry Guidelines The Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System is hosting its 10th Annual TrashedArt contest throughout the month of April. Remake, Reuse and Renew items you would usually recycle or throw away into unique and beautiful creations. TrashedArt is open to artists in grades 7–12 and adults residing in Mercer County. One entry per artist. Entries must be original artwork and no larger than 3' x 3' x 3' and no heavier than 25 lbs. Entries must be dropped off between Wednesday, March 20, and Wednesday, March 27.
