Celebrity Book Clubs
Book Clubs are having a moment. If you do a google search for "celebrity book club" you will see that there are a variety of current articles about what famous people are reading and discussing. Here is a brief list of the top celebrity clubs: - Book Club Central - Sarah Jessica Parker is selecting the titles for this American Library Association initiative. The site also includes tips for running a book club, finding book clubs and selecting titles.
- Oprah's Book Club - No celebrity book club list would be complete without Oprah.
- Reese's Book Club - Reese Witherspoon moderates this Facebook page with books and other book lover related posts.
- Belletrist - Created by Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss, features a different book and independent bookstore every month.
- Our Shared Shelf - Emma Watson runs this feminist book club via GoodReads.com.
Don't forget about social media! These clubs and others have strong social media accounts and/or hashtags. Many celebrities post books they are reading without having a formal club. For instance, Sarah Michelle Gellar posts her books with #smgbookclub and Mindy Kaling makes recommendations via her social media accounts as well. Look for such suggestions on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Dear Library Lady, Could you recommend mysteries that would make for an interesting book discussion? Sincerely, Frantic Freida Dear F.F., There are so many mystery writers! i'm going to suggest the following works as they may be lesser known and are more likely to have been overlooked: - The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey
- Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indridason
- The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid
- The Burning Court by John Dickson Carr
- Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger
- The Bottoms by Joe R. Landsdale
Actually, most mysteries don't really make for lengthy discussion so I've come up with an alternative format for a mystery bookclub. Instead of having all the members read the same work, you can pick an author who has a multi-volumed series and have each member select a different title allowing for a compare/contrast discussion. Some of those authors are: - Lousie Perry - Inspector Gamache Series
- Peter Lovesey - Peter Diamond Series
- Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone Series
- Martha Grimes - Richard Jury Series
- Michael Dibdin - Aurelio Zen Series
If you'd like, please come into the library and together we can go through the mystery stacks and I can help you fine tune your search for an appropriate title. Your friend from between the covers, The Library Lady
