Director's Corner - Rachel Dick Hughes Gratitude & a look back

It is hard to believe that around this time last year we had just packed up the entire library and moved a few of our things into our charming (read: tiny) temporary location over on 3rd Avenue. We have been taking some time to look back at photos of the library before the renovation and of the move, and as we do, we are overwhelmed with gratitude. One of my very favourite days of my career was packup day last July 21st. We had over 30 volunteers come to box up our collection. It was an incredible day! In no time at all, over 25,000 items were boxed and stored – what an amazing accomplishment. I speak for all the staff when I say how thankful we are for a community that comes together in force to give their time for a good cause. Many of you gave to the library financially as well, donating toward the renovation. Our donor wall is nearing completion and should be ready shortly. We appreciate your patience and hope it is worth the wait! We continue to accept donations to re-build our financial reserves that were depleted by this renovation. For more information visit www.strathmorelibrary.ca/donate. In our temporary space with very limited collections and services, the accommodating and gracious nature of our patrons and community partners was a gift. Looking back

on that summer, I am astonished at how our Summer Reading Coordinators managed to run the program completely on their own at the arena (Well done Alicia and Genista!), at how generous our computer users were to share the limited computer time available, and at how everyone gave a little to make our mini-library experiment work. Behind all the beautiful volunteers in our photos is a facility in desperate need of attention. It had been awhile since we had looked at photos of the pre-reno library, and we were amazed at a few things. First, how different (read: dark and crowded) the space was (especially that children’s area), and second, how we even managed to function with very little space for patrons to sit and relax and even less space for staff to get their work done! We are so appreciative that the Town saw our plight and addressed it far more quickly than we had anticipated. It is incredible how the feel of a space affects the mood of the people in it. There is a definite sense of joy among those who work and spend their time here (except for the poor little guy who really didn’t want to go home yesterday . . .). We love that this space fosters opportunities for enjoyment, learning, and connection for people of all ages and walks of life. As we look back to where we were a year ago, at that busy and challenging time, we have so much to make us thankful. And we are enjoying taking it a bit easier this summer too! We wish you all many relaxing days as you delight in this long, hot, summer.
