Art Exhibition: John Yates
This month the library is pleased to welcome Okotoks photographer John Yates! John is a local Calgary area photgrapher who specializes in wildlife, nature, and landscapes. "Photography has given me the opportunity to see places and live experiences that would normally be unavailable to the average individual had it not been for this hobby" says John. John enjoys the opportunity to photograph animals in their environment rather than an environment created by man. John has traveled extensively through Canada as well as South America, Africa, and Europe. Some of John's work has been displayed at the Calgary Stampede and can be seen on the Fine Art America website, under "John Yates Photos" on Facebook, and at www.johnyatesphotos.com.

"Just wanted to say thank you! Kennedi said she had an amazing day yesterday. She said it was so much fun!" 2016 Summer Reading Program Comment

Director's Corner: Alexis McKenzie

I’ve been with the Strathmore Library for three weeks now and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the community. It has been very busy here with the Summer Reading Program and other events. Recently we set two very exciting records: most cardigans worn in the library, and most cardigans worn on a librarian in the library (above)! I was starting to get a little warm as they put me in 16 different sweaters! The event was very fun and had complimentary cookies and iced tea for our cardigan-clad participants. Summer can be a busy time, but it’s also the perfect time to curl up with a good book. Whether it’s a sunny day and you want to sit in the park under a shady tree, or a stormy day with a blanket and some tea, books make the perfect summer companion. Lately I’ve been reading murder mysteries by Tess Gerritsen. If you like a suspenseful but not-too-gory mystery, Gerritsen is worth a shot. As a former medical examiner she really knows her stuff and always keeps me guessing! In addition, if you’re a commuter like I am, audio books will make your drive something to look forward to. I’ve been listening to “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman, which is particularly enjoyable in audiobook format because it is read by a full cast of actors. To make it even better, obtaining the audiobook was easy! I simply downloaded “American Gods” by using the free Hoopla App. It was very convenient, and with automatic returns I don’t need to worry about overdue fees. Because it’s a download, I don’t have to pull over and change CDs when I’m on the next part of the book. I love Hoopla! Lastly, you may have noticed that our library is a huge supporter of the arts. We love to feature and promote the creativity of our local artists. Currently, we are looking to feature artists work in the fall, so if you’ve got some pieces you’d like to display, please let us know.
