Autumn is here, and that means we are busy planning for next year! Thank you to all of you who have completed our brief survey this autumn. We have appreciated your feedback. Your support is a great joy and encouragement to our staff and volunteers. At the end of September, Library Board Chair Geoff Ball and I made a presentation to Town Council. We wanted to let them know how much we (and you) are enjoying the new building, but also to let them know that our finances have been strained by the expansion. With the renovation, our square footage more than doubled from about 4,500 SF to 9,500 SF. As you can imagine, this comes with many extra costs. We have also been busier than ever since the renovation, with new memberships up 57% over last year. We have added 750 new members to our ranks from January to August alone! This brings us to over 6,000 members, which is fantastic for a community with our population. From January to August this year, over 4,000 people attended library programs, and circulation of library materials increased 23%. As these numbers might tell you, our staff are nearly worn out! We simply cannot keep going at this pace without an increase to our staffing levels, which requires more funding. As Town Council prepares to begin their budgeting process, let your Councillors know that you value a vibrant library!

We recognize that times are tough for everyone, but particularly in economic downturns, library use has been shown to increase. More people need access to computers, internet, and the expertise and resources we have to offer. We believe that an investment in the library is an investment in an inclusive community. Did you know that Strathmore ranks 4th among Marigold Libraries in its use of Overdrive/Libby? Many of you are enjoying digital books, either print or audio. I have been experiencing some mild insomnia lately, and I love the sleep feature on Libby and Cloud Library that allows me to play a book (ideally) just as long as it takes me to fall asleep. On audiobook I have been busy going through the Louise Penny books for a second time. She is far and away my favourite author, and I love immersing myself in the world of characters she creates. I have also decided finally to listen through the Harry Potter series, and it is delightful! As the series goes on, the books get longer, though, so I am often scrambling to finish reading them before the due date! Right now I am listening to A Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman after a patron recommended it to me. The narrator sets the perfect tone, and it has been a great read on some of these damp and windy autumn days. I’ll close with one of my favourite responses from the survey about how the library benefits the community: “It makes our small town feel big.” I hope you enjoy some books this autumn that open your world and broaden your horizons.

How does the library benefit you or the community? "Our entire family LOVES the library. It's an exciting day when we get to go. Kids love the programs offered-seasonal theme days, film Fridays, Summer Reading Program. My husband and I love the selection of books - we always find something to borrow. Thank you for all you do!"

Book Review - Jennifer Stark

Living in occupied Poland, Chaya a Jewish teenager, wants to make a difference and joins the Resistance. Using forged papers, her fair features, and knowledge of languages to travel in and out of the Jewish ghettos, she smuggles food, weapons, documents in and people out. Knowing that the resistance does not really have a chance against the Nazis, they are determined to save as many lives as possible and show the world that the Jewish people can stand strong in the midst of unimaginable horrors.
|
Jennifer A. Nielsen wrote an amazing historical fiction with great insight to what may have happened in occupied Poland and the struggles that Resistance may have encountered. With a strong female character grappling with the knowledge of what was happening to her people and wanting to save them by any means possible, she also struggled with her faith during this dark time. I highly recommend this book not only to Juvenile readers, but adults as well for a unique perspective on the Holocaust.

Food for Fines returns in November! The library is pleased to announce the return of Food for Fines from November 1-30. Here is your chance to pay off those fines and help families in need. What makes November's Food for Fines campaign unique is that all food collected this month will go to the Siksika Food Bank. For every non-perishable food item or personal hygiene item you bring to the library in November, we will waive $2.00 of your overdue fines. Please note that the Food for Fines program may only be used for overdue fines and cannot be used for lost items, service fees, or credit toward future overdue fines. The library will be collecting cash donations for the food bank as well.
