I Read Canadian Day The first I Read Canadian Day is happening on February 19, 2020! This is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people. The goal is to engage readers with Canadian books by having them spend 15 minutes reading a Canadian book of their choice on February 19th. Canadian book sales have been going down since 2005 and Canadian publishers have been struggling to compete with their American counterparts. This reality has led Canadian author Eric Walters to partner with the Canadian Children's Book Centre; the Canadian Children’s Society of Authors, Illustrators and Performers; and the Ontario Library Association to create a day where Canadian books are read. Their hope is that this exposure to Canadian books will lead Canadians to identify with them and read more of them. This is important because, as Andrew Wooldridge says in Quill & Quire, "Canadian children should have wide access to Canadian stories that reflect their lives and experiences." The Strathmore Municipal Library will be celebrating I Read Canadian Day with a few children's activities. Stay turned to our Facebook Page and website for more details.
