From time to time, visitors to our library find it a surprisingly noisy place. The role of libraries in communities has certainly changed over the years, and people use libraries differently than they used to. In the past we have struggled to offer both opportunity for quiet, focused work and for collaboration while maintaining the library as a community space where people can connect and get to know others. In 2016, the Library Board held extensive community consultations to create a Plan of Service setting the library’s priorities for 2017-2019. The provincial government gave a us a long list from which to choose, and the five service responses that topped the list are: - Create Young Readers
- Visit a Comfortable Place
- Connect to the Online World
- Satisfy Curiosity
- Know Your Community
The province describes “Visit a Comfortable Place” as “Residents will have safe and welcoming physical places to meet and interact with others or to sit quietly and read and will have open and accessible virtual spaces that support networking.” One of the greatest benefits to our library’s recent expansion is that we can now consistently offer quiet space outside of the main stacks area. throughout the library, some in quiet corners that offer flexible spaces that can accommodate different needs. We also regularly offer a designated quiet study space in our small meeting room that you are welcome to access anytime that room is not booked. If you are having trouble finding a quiet place in the library, please ask our staff, and they would be glad to direct you to a spot that would suit your needs. There are certainly times when the library is noisier than others. Thursday mornings, for example, we have Storytime in the library, and “Creating Young Readers” is no quiet endeavour! We are discovering too that the space is better used now that it is more welcoming and comfortable. More people are spending more time here, and that tends to make for more noise, just as it makes for more community connections and interesting conversations. We love to have you visit the library! If there is anything we can do to make the library more comfortable and welcoming for you, please let us know.
