This is a very busy library with lots of programming for all ages and an amazing number of community partners. We have hired our Summer Reading program Coordinators and they are already busy planning this summer’s programs by the time you read this newsletter. Carly Davidson and Leah Elder are planning and conducting this year’s Summer Reading Programs. Registration begins on June 11 and the program runs July 4-August 28. This year’s theme is ‘Wild’. School is almost out, so parents are starting to think of ways to encourage their children to keep reading during the summer months, joining the summer reading program is an excellent way to have fun and keep up those reading skills. Most of the activities are literacy based and participants are encouraged to borrow books for home reading as well. If you are travelling this summer, why not consider joining the Summer Reading Club. Drop by and pick up your free passport, record your summer reading and collect our reading challenge stickers. The TD Summer Reading Club website : tdsummerreadingclub.ca offers reading suggestions for all ages, on this year’s theme 'Wild!'. Some of my favourite ‘Wild' books for three to five year olds are: - Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown.
- Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae.
- Very Cranky Bear by Nick Boland.
- Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
For lots of online reading options, check out the Tumble Book Library, available on the library website. A good choice on the ‘Wild’ theme might be Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale. This site also has lots of games and puzzles. If your child is a beginning reader, our ‘Level Reader Collection’ will offer a selection of titles books at the appropriate level for your child. Happy summer and happy reading!

Meet the new Summer Reading Program Coordinators!
|

Meet Carly! (left) Hey there! I’m Carly and I’m excited to be one of the coordinators for the Summer Reading Program this year! Reading has been my absolute favourite activity in the entire world pretty much from the second I learned how to read, to this day, and so I’m really looking forward to meeting and reading with everyone! I live at home in Strathmore during the spring and summer months and during the school year I go the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta. In the fall I’ll be starting my third year of my Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a minor in Psychology, and after I’m finished my BA I plan to attend SAIT to get my Library Technician diploma and hopefully begin working in a school library. My favourite activities (other than reading, of course!) are teaching swimming lessons, napping, and playing with Gizmo my African pygmy hedgehog. With the awesomely creative Wild as the theme for our Summer Reading Program this year, there are a plethora of creative possibilities for games, crafts and activities. I can’t wait to put them into action for you!

Meet Leah! (right) Hi everyone, my name is Leah Elder, and I am one of your Summer Reading Program Coordinators for 2016. I am originally from St. Albert (just north of Edmonton), but I moved to Calgary 2 years ago. I just finished my first year of engineering studies at SAIT, but I have a background in biological sciences and genetics, psychology, cabinetmaking, and everything outdoors. I have been a Girl Guide since I was 5 and I am a Brownie leader in Calgary. My favourite adult novel is Atlas Shrugged or Harry Potter, and my favourite kids book is Jillian Jiggs, and Something from Nothing. I think reading is the best way to explore something new. With a library card you can learn all about a new hobby or interest and decide if you like it before you dive in! Our WILD theme is going to be so much fun; I am looking forward to sharing my experience in the Canadian Wild, Wild Jobs, and Wild Messes in some of our theme weeks. I am so excited to meet everyone so we can spend the summer reading new books, trying out new crafts and games, and just having a WILD time!

Laugh Until it Helps
June 21 (11:00am-12:00pm) In helping children be more resilient, the goal is not to deny the reality of their struggles but rather to recognize areas of special need and help them gain insight into their talents and inner strengths. Knowing how to face up to and answer tough questions, connect with people in ways that are helpful, and deal with frustration with creativity, imagination, and even humour are all ways we can teach children to become more independent and enjoy success in school and in the community. This program is free to attend and no registration is required.
