For the romantic: Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce tells the story of a would-be war correspondent stuck answering closely vetted letters to an advice column in a women’s magazine in London during the Blitz. A sweet and engaging story.
For the nostalgic: Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy. I loved this book for the way it transported me back to Avonlea and offered a different perspective on a complex and beloved character.
For the contemplative: Embers: One Ojibway’s Meditations by Richard Wagamese. His writing is exquisite, and this beautiful volume would make a wonderful gift for anyone who craves a moment or two of peace and inspiration.
For the suspense lover: Foe by Iain Reid had its film rights purchased before it even hit bookstores. A couple’s solitary life on the farm is interrupted when a stranger arrives. This book will be sure to keep the reader up all night.
For the Canlit lover: Vi by Kim Thuy. You may remember Thuy from her fantastic first novel Ru. This novel describes the experience of Vietnamese refugees as they adjust to their new lives.
For the mystery lover: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is the first in a series set in 1950s England. The main character is a precocious and delightful eleven-year old girl who will worm her way into your heart as she solves the village mystery.
For the hard-to-buy-for: A Man called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Our online book club’s pick for December, this book is hilarious and moving, unexpected, and enchanting. I have a hard time thinking of anyone who would not enjoy this book.
Teens: The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline is an Indigenous dystopian novel that has received a lot of critical attention, including winning the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature.
Late Elementary: Peter Nimble and his Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier is a fantasy novel that reads like a classic fairy tale with a twist. Peter undertakes quests and encounters all kinds of characters who become unexpected enemies or allies. Watch for the companion book, Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard.
Early Elementary: The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield is a great gift for children facing their fears and exploring their potential. A great conversation-starter.
Preschool: Picture the Sky by Barbara Reid is perfect for your imaginative preschooler who is busy noticing everything. Reid’s unique plasticine illustrations are gorgeous, and adults will enjoy them as well.
Toddlers: Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle has been a favourite at our house for awhile. A lovely rhyming text, lots of animal noises, and an important lesson make this a great book for toddlers.
