We are well into the new year, and it is off to an eventful start! Many of you have read the letter from our Library Board describing the fiscal challenges the library has been facing over the past few years. Those of you who have not can find it on our website (CLICK HERE) or request a copy when you visit the library. Thank you for your kind words and support. I know that the Library Board, staff, and volunteers all appreciate working for an organization that is so deeply valued by the community, and we have been very encouraged by the your response. We are hopeful that your support will lead to constructive and helpful discussions with Town Council regarding sustainable operational funding for the library in the future. We want to extend a special thank you and congratulations to those who participated in our Family Literacy Day Bingo contest. We were delighted to see how many of you got into the spirit of things and wish we had prizes for all of you. A couple of families even had blackouts! We hope you enjoyed the activities and continue to incorporate them into your family time throughout the year. At the library, we enjoy seeing families play together, telling stories with the puppets or with the dolls in the dollhouse, building all kinds of amazing structures out of Lego and blocks, and sitting together on the couch to enjoy a good story. It is encouraging to see parents, grandparents, and caregivers working hard to raise book-loving children. Thanks also to everyone who participated in our first Read for 15 campaign! We had 119 readers this year, which is a great start. Thank you especially to the teachers who reported their classroom’s numbers! This year’s winners are: - Hustled Yer Butt (most improved): Carstairs
- Readerpalooza (highest number reported): Red Deer
- Most Readerly (highest percent of population): Bashaw
Congratulations to those communities, and look out. We plan to come on strong next year!

February is one of our favourite months at the library because it is time for Blind Date with a Book! We have heard from many of you who have found some treasures among our blind dates, and we love your willingness to take the plunge into the literary unknown! If you haven’t tried before, I challenge you to take a chance this month. I have been reading a lot of award nominees and winners in the past month or so. Here are my favourites of the bunch:
