Summer is a great time for stories. I have wonderful memories of sleepily listening to my dad read The Hobbit while rain poured down on our tent trailer in summers past, of curling up with Little House on the Prairie for an afternoon, and of sneaking books into the backyard when mom would kick me outside to play. And of course, I spent many hours playing library with my siblings and friends! If you are a parent or caregiver, summer is a great time to share stories with your children. Not only does it create great memories, but it gives their literacy skills a boost as well. Come to the library with lots of time for browsing and let your child choose whatever they like. Take turns reading to each other – let your child have a chance to practice reading aloud. If your child is interested in a book well above his reading level, read it together. Listening to stories gives your child the chance to develop comprehension skills and develop of a love of stories. It also lets you enjoy a great story and get to experience discovery through your child’s perspective. Part of literacy that tends to get overlooked in the rush to get kids reading is writing. Suggest your child keep a reading journal, noting what she liked or disliked about what she has read, what it made him think about, or what she would change about the story. Write postcards to friends and family when visiting a new place. Create a grocery list together, reading flyers and cookbooks to help identify what you need. A fun way to get the whole family involved in reading is to share an audiobook together on a road trip. Try a classic like A Wrinkle in Time, and you can reward your happy

travellers with a movie night when you get home to see what you think of the newest screen adaptation. Other classics the family may enjoy are Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, anything by Roald Dahl, and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Younger children may prefer something like Michael Bond’s Paddington series or Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. My husband and I recently listened to Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately, the Milk! This book was ridiculous, far-fetched, and all together delightful. For the science-loving family, you might enjoy And audiobooks are easier than ever to access. Borrow CDs from the library or try Cloud Library, Libby (formerly Overdrive), or Hoopla for audiobooks you can download to your phone or tablet wherever you are. Ask our staff for information or help if you need it. My last few personal favourites on audiobook have been the Louise Penny series, particularly Bury Your Dead; Miss Dimple Suspects by Pam Ward – a fun, light, cozy mystery set in Georgia during the Second World War; The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott – fiction, but it taught me a few new things about the sinking of the Titanic, and Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak – a British family is quarantined together over the holidays. I hope you have time to savour the joy of stories this summer. Let me know if you find any new great reads!

Overdrive vs Cloud Library Are you an eBook or eAudiobook borrower? Did you know that the Strathmore Municipal Library offers several options to satisfy your eBook or eAudiobook needs? While most people use Overdrive to borrow online books, what they don't know is that Cloud Library often offers the same items with far fewer holds on them! For example: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah eAudiobook - Overdrive has 54 holds. Cloud Library has 1 hold! The Alice Network by Kate Quinn - Overdrive has 106 holds. Cloud Library has 0 holds! Considering checking out Cloud Library the next time you are searching for your next eBook or eAudiobook. You may be quite surprised at the great treasures you find!

Come with me and sit in the forest. Listen to the foliage and the whisper of the trees. Lingering in the shadows and looking for hidden gems amongst the swaying branches…. Come and explore with me…. The woods, forest and trees all around us. The mystery of the dense brush. The shapes, colors and intrigue amongst the leaves, tree trunks, grass and the sky above… all calling for me to come and explore.

Book Review - Jennifer Stark The God’s Chair - E.C. Varga I recently had the privilege of reading The God’s Chair as well as meeting the author herself. The God’s Chair is a wonderfully written story about a 16 year old boy named Mike who found out that not only did he have family, a large family, but he was a wizard as well. Mike’s story takes you through Calgary, the surrounding areas, as well as in Transylvania. You encounter with Mike first love, spells, vampires, werewolves, dwarves with heart thumping action, sarcasm, victories and mistakes. OH! And don’t forget the possibility of dragons! You learn and grow with Mike as he learns about his rich family history and what he and everyone is capable of. Not only that! But E.C. Varga leaves you anticipating the next book in the series! A great read for 10 years and up who love fantasy. The God's Chair is written by local author E.C. Varga and will be available to borrow from the library soon. |
