For countless decades, people around the world have reported seeing unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Concentrating on reports from the Rocky Mountain West, this presentation outlines some of the most familiar, and a few lesser known UFO sightings. It weighs UFO sightings and media reactions to them against a number of official U.S. government studies, and it assesses the popular durability of UFOs as myth or mystery. Presented by Rick W. Sturdevant. Sat., Oct. 19, 11 a.m. Manitou Springs Heritage Center 517 Manitou Ave., 80829 Sat., Oct. 19, 3 p.m. Penrose Library

Holiday history is very revealing about culture. Halloween is one of our more misunderstood holidays. It is not about evil forces, but about overpowering them. It spread through most European cultures. Its history includes the harvest, changing religious beliefs, and amusing superstitions. It was once more about courtship and romance than Valentine’s Day. For many years, more Americans sent Halloween postcards than Christmas ones. Halloween practices changed with the times, especially the Baby Boom. Now, Americans spend more money on Halloween than on any other holiday, save Christmas. Come enjoy the historical Halloween! Presented by Katherine Sturdevant. Sat., Oct. 12, 2 p.m. High Prairie Library Tues., Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m. East Library |
