If you have not yet read any of Patricia Polacco's picture books, put that on your list of things to do. Many of her books, which she writes and illustrates, are based on her own family and family stories. Most of her books are written for kids 5-10 years old - the stories are longer, yet there are wonderfully realistic illustrations to keep the story going. She has written more than 100 books. Her website will list all the titles. Do read at least a dozen! - Melody
