Her Right Foot by Dave EggersPresents facts about the Statue of Liberty, describing its creation in France, assembly in the United States in 1886, and the symbolism of its right foot which appears to be breaking free from chains. What a dry description; think of this as a BIG picture book, that tells about real things. Most pages have between one sentence and one brief paragraph. I really enjoyed reading this brand new book. - Melody History, ages 5-10

Grownups, you will find this book quite interesting. Can you imagine a world without the thousands of books you will read to your own children? This could lead to some very interesting discussions with your kids. Picture books are such fun ways to learn about history. - Melody History, children's books, John Newbery 1713-1767 - ages 6-10

John Ronald's Dragons : the story of J.R.R. Tolkien by Caroline McAlisterA picture book account of the childhood of Lord of the Rings master author J. R. R. Tolkien describes how a young John Ronald's fascination with dragons enabled him to imagine a fantasy world that rallied him through his painful and loveless early years and his service in WW I. I thought this picture book was grand! J. R. R. Tolkien did not have a happily ever after childhood, but the book does not dwell on the sadness. The illustrations carry some of the burdens, and kids should be able to understand why he felt sad. There are some extra treats in the author and illustrator's notes at the end of the book. - Melody Literature, biography of Tolkien 1892-1973

This book has a BIG surprise - Percy Fawcett did not find the lost city. I was surprised that a children's book could end this way, yet it is an interesting, informative and exciting book. - Melody History, Percy Fawcett 1867-1925, explorers, Royal Geographic Society
