Before Morning by Joyce Sidman (2016)Hoping for a break from her usual rushed schedule, a small child watches as her wish comes true in the wake of a heavy snowfall, in a lyrical story complemented by scratchboard art. By the Newbery Honor-winning author of Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night and the Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator of Swirl by Swirl. I have loved every single book by this author, and the illustrator won a Caldecott Medal for The House in the Night. Both books are short, but can be enjoyed over and over, as there are wonderful details to explore. Put both books on hold, now! - Melody Art, literature - ages 4-8

The Real Poop on Pigeons! by Kevin McCloskey (2015)With his trademark mix of humor, well-researched facts and artistry, Kevin McCloskey delivers the straight poop on these humble creatures, in a funny, yet instructional, guide to all things pigeon. I love science books that allow you to skim the surface of a new topic. Kevin McCloskley's 'Toon-books' are excellent for young readers. We Dig Worms is the first book in this format. Science - ages 4-8

Poet : the Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton by Don Tate (2015)Shares the story of George Moses Horton, who born into slavery taught himself to read and earned money by selling his poems to the students of the University of North Carolina, before becoming the first published African American poet of the South. Picture book biographies are so easy to add to any homeschool day, and I am constantly promoting these treasures. - Melody History - 1798-1880, literature - ages 5-12

Whoosh! : Lonnie Johnson's Super-soaking Stream of Inventions by Chris Barton (2016)An introduction to the life and creative achievements of NASA engineer and inventor Lonnie Johnson describes his childhood in a house full of siblings, the problem-solving talents that inspired his career and his accidental invention of the Super Soaker. Another treasure that many kids will be interested in reading! Picture book biographies focus more on positive character traits, such as perseverance, as we see in this fine book. - Melody Biography - Ages 5-12

Giant Squid by Candace Fleming (2016)A strikingly illustrated, poetic tribute to the enigmatic giant squid describes the species' life deep within the sea and the clues that today's scientists use to gain understanding about its characteristics and habitat. Illustrated by the Caldecott Medal-winning artist of My Friend Rabbit. Kids love to read about animals, although not everyone will be excited about giant squids. The pages are dark, to help us see the dark that this creature inhabits. Information at the end of the book is excellent. - Melody Science - ages 5-10
