Getting Started with Streaming TV Wednesday, December 14, 6:30 pm Looking for an alternative to traditional cable and dish television services? Have you heard of Roku, Chromecast, or Apple TV, but are not quite sure about these alternate TV and entertainment devices? Maybe you have heard of Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video but don’t know much about ‘streaming media?’ Come to the library to learn if these newer and alternative entertainment options are right for you, and how to get started with using them. Several streaming devices will be on display, and after the program you will get an opportunity to try them out. This program will be led by Cora J. Belden Reference Librarian Michael Murphy. Monthly Makerspace Wednesday, December 21, 5:30pm-7:30pm This program is for all ages! Join us for our third Monthly Makerspace at the Cora J. Belden Library! This program will consist of two hours of free time to come play with and learn the latest DIY tech, complete Maker projects, converse and network with fellow makers, be creative, and more. We will have available for use: our Maker Bot Replicator 3D printer, 3D scanner, Arduinos (along with a Sparkduino mini-robot), Raspberry Pis, Makey Makeys, Windows 10 PCs with various Maker and coding software, a Stop Motion Video station, as well as random Maker materials for completing projects such as paper circuits, wearable electronics, and more. Children in grades 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required, just drop in. SCORE - Business Counseling Sessions1st Monday of each month, 12:30 pm-4:30 pm(1 hour appointments) (NOTE: Second Monday during months of January, July & September) The library is now partnering with SCORE - a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. SCORE has nearly 50 years of experience in providing mentors, workshops, counseling and tools for growing businesses. SCORE is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration. One hour counseling appointments are available at the library on the 1st Monday of every month.

Kyrgyzstan Art Exhibit The children’s library is currently featuring children’s art from Kyrgyzstan. The drawings are the children's expression of the phrase "I Love My Kyrgyzstan" and were created using watercolors, crayon, pencil and paint. The exhibit comes to us through the Fermata Arts Foundation, Inc, located in Avon, CT, and the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic The exhibit has been traveling around New England until February 2017 and will only be here at our library until the end of December.

Minecraft for Grades 6-12Minecraft is changing nights and hours. Please contact Mike for information about new dates. Do you like Minecraft? Come to the library and game with your friends on the library's own Minecraft server! Users can log into the server from anywhere they have an internet connection. Further, the library has meeting times once a week so that you can game together with your friends!

It's renewal time. Support the library by joining the Friends of the Cora J. Belden Library. The Friends of the Library will be hosting an annual silent auction in December. Please contact us if you have a basket you wish to donate. Gift certificates also accepted. Please stop by to do some holiday shopping in December. The Friends are also collecting new or nearly new books for their ongoing book sales. Due to space limitations, we are unable to accept older items. Please check with the Information Desk for information on what to do with old books. All proceeds from memberships, auction items, book sales go towards library programming and more! Training Opportunities: Cora J. Belden Library launches Niche Academy service to enhance patron training, access to electronic resources. Want to learn how to download digital magazines through Zinio? No problem! Looking to stream music on Hoopla? We’ve got you covered! Cora J. Belden Library now offers Rocky Hill residents a wealth of information, available anywhere at any time. In fact, we offer so much that it may be hard to keep up with it all! We know that all of these online tools can sometimes be confusing so we are now offering brief video tutorials through Niche Academy to walk you through how to use our electronic resources. Niche Academy has 13 different short, simple tutorials that you can watch from home (or anywhere!) for those times when you can’t visit us for an in-person demonstration. We also have 4 bonus tutorials that offer an easy way to learn about social media tools.
