Rediscover the PastMaybe you remember Grandma's old blue dress and serious shoes or Dad's best suit and hat, but did you ever wonder why they wore what they wore?This program explores how clothing communicates who we are, what we do, and the society in which we live. You'll look at everything from military inspiration during the Civil War to the influence of political liberalism in the 1960s. Recall the clothing of your ancestors, your parents, and your own fashion choices as we take this little trip through over 100 years of fashion. You can even contribute to the discussion by bringing a favorite garment and sharing your memories.Karen De Pauw, PresenterKaren DePauw is a Research and Collections Associate at the Connecticut Historical Society. Come to this workshop to learn about these free open source programs and a whole bunch more, including those that deal with anti-virus, PC security, PC cleanup, text editing, multimedia, and more. Conversational ESL Thursdays December 4, 11 and 18 10:15 - 11:45 am

Conversational ESL is a FREE class for adults who are low intermediate to intermediate ESL students, They have a basic working knowledge of English. They want to increase their speaking fluency and vocabulary. Initially, the classes will be held on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Sep. 4 and will continue if sufficient interest is shown. Topics chosen for conversation may come from the students themselves and also, the teacher. She will provide conversation starters. These may include talking with medical personnel, teachers, community workers and English speaking neighbors and friends. They may also deal with current events and be taken from the internet and newspaper articles.

SCORE - Business Counseling SessionsMonday, December 15, 12:30 pm-4:30 pm(1 hours appointments) The library is now partnering with SCORE - a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. SCORE has nearly 50 years of experience in providing mentors, workshops, counseling and tools for growing businesses. SCORE is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration. One hour counseling appointments are available at the library on the 3rd Monday of every month.

The 2015 Preschool and Family Day Care Expo! Wednesday, January 14 from 6-7:30 pm
This event will offer local parents the opportunity to research preschool programs in the Rocky Hill, Cromwell, Newington, Wethersfield and Hartford communities in one informal evening. Program Directors or teachers will be sharing information with parents regarding their preschool’s philosophy, teacher/child ratio, tuition schedule and program structure. Application materials and leaflets will be available to take home. Family Day Care Home Providers will also be present. Teen Advisory Board Meeting

The Cora J. Belden Library has a new Teen Advisory Board (TAB) for grades 6-12! TAB is a group of teens who meet once a month to make the library the best place it can be for fellow teens. For example, the group will come up with cool programs for teens, make suggestions for developing the library's teen collection (books, movies, CD's, etc.), and design displays for the teen section among others. Create your own special 3D Holiday/New Year ornament and enter it into a contest. The best one wins a small prize (and bragging rights as the winner of the 1st Annual Holiday Ornament contest!) Contact Mike Murphy in the Information Department for tips on how to design a small ornament and to arrange printing times on the library's 3-D printer. It's that time of year again for the Friends Annual Gift Basket Silent Auction. Place your bids on some wonderful baskets for gifts (or for yourself). The bidding will begin on Wednesday evening, December 3 and end at 8 pm on Thursday, December 18. All baskets will be on tables surrounding the new books in front of the adult circulation desk. Check out the bidding rules posted on the tables and place your bids. Bid sheets will be next to each gift basket.

A Book on Every Bed
Start A New Holiday Reading Tradition,
This holiday season include books and reading in your celebrations. It’s a wonderful tradition to begin -or continue- with your family. And it will create warm memories that extend through the years. After the children have fallen asleep on a winter holiday’s eve, place a special gift-wrapped book at the foot of each child’s bed. The children will awake to find a present they can open right away, beginning a special reading tradition they will love. Plus, it’ll keep them in bed just a bit longer!

To help you with this new reading tradition, the Friends of the Cora J. Belden Library will be selling a variety of specially chosen children and teen books. Order forms will be available starting December 3. Just order by December 18 for December 19-December 23 pick up. Free gift wrapping!
