| Hearts Made Whole by Jody HedlundHistorical Romance. When her widowed father dies, Caroline Taylor takes over caring for her four siblings and tending Michigan's Windmill Point Lighthouse. But she's not allowed to be the light keeper because she's a woman, and wounded Civil War veteran Ryan Chambers gets the job. Since the family has nowhere to go, Ryan lets them stay for a bit. That's good, since it becomes clear that he's not up to the job due to the opium and alcohol he uses to dull the pain from his war injuries. But when odd things start happening, it's also clear that someone wants Caroline gone. Realistic characters, a sweet romance, a touch of suspense, and the healing power of faith combine to make this a delightful 2nd book in the loosely related Beacons of Hope series. |

| The Potter's Lady by Judith MillerHistorical Romance. Newly graduated from the Philadelphia School of Design for Women in 1872, Irish immigrant Rose McKay is delighted when her brother, Ewan, buys a West Virginia pottery (she's positive her artistic talents will help it succeed). At first, she clashes with employee Rylan Campbell over the way things are done, but a growing affection develops between them. A major problem, however, remains: Rylan thinks Rose's would-be beau, the owner of a rival pottery business, is up to no good. As success eludes their pottery, Rose and Rylan trust God and pin their hopes on winning a big design contest. This 2nd in the Refined by Love series is just as entertaining as the first book, The Brickmaker's Bride, which shares Ewan's story. |
