Hungry Ghosts
by Anthony Bourdain and various artists
From the publisher: "On a dark, haunted night, a Russian Oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles--where each storyteller tells a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings--and prays to survive the challenge.
"Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food."

Alpha: Abidjan to Paris
by Bessora and Barroux
From the publisher: "Alpha's wife and son left Côte d'Ivoire months ago to join his sister-in-law in Paris, but Alpha has heard nothing from them since. With a visa, Alpha's journey to reunite with his family would take a matter of hours. Without one, he is adrift for over a year, encountering human traffickers in the desert, refugee camps in northern Africa, overcrowded boats carrying migrants between the Canary Islands and Europe's southern coast, and an unforgettable cast of fellow travelers lost and found along the way. Throughout, Alpha stays the course, carrying his loved ones' photograph close to his heart as he makes his perilous trek across continents."

The Beatles Yellow Submarine
by Bill Morrison
From the publisher: "The Beatles are recruited by the Captain of the Yellow Submarine to help him free Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the world of Pepperland from the music-hating Blue Meanies.
"The music-loving, underwater paradise of Pepperland has been overrun by the music-hating Blue Meanies and their leader, Chief Blue Meanie. They turn the people of Pepperland into living statues by dropping apples on them and imprison the Pepperland's guardians, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band inside a soundproof blue glass globe, before confiscating all the music instruments in the land."

The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons: A Semi-Serious A-to-Z Archive
by Robert Mankoff (editor)
From the publisher: "The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons is a prodigious, [...] two-volume, 1,600-page A-to-Z curation of cartoons from the magazine from 1924 to the present. Mankoff--for two decades the cartoon editor of the New Yorker--organizes nearly 3,000 cartoons into more than 250 categories of recurring New Yorker themes and visual tropes, including cartoons on banana peels, meeting St. Peter, being stranded on a desert island, snowmen, lion tamers, Adam and Eve, the Grim Reaper, and dogs, of course. The result is hilarious and Mankoff's commentary throughout adds both depth and whimsy."

Patience
by Daniel Clowes
Neel Mukherjee at The Guardian asks, "Would you go anywhere near a book described on its back cover as 'a cosmic timewarp deathtrip to the primordial infinite of everlasting love'? Yet, while it may have its tongue firmly in its cheek, the blurb is not an inaccurate precis of Daniel Clowes’s latest graphic novel...This is a deeply affecting book, and despite its gritty prose, colourful language and hardboiled trappings, a tender one, its sustained undertow of tenderness and melancholy giving it a surprising delicacy."

Octavia Butler's Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation
by Damian Duffy and John Jennings
From the publisher: "Butler’s most celebrated, critically acclaimed work tells the story of Dana, a young black woman who is suddenly and inexplicably transported from her home in 1970s California to the pre–Civil War South. As she time-travels between worlds, one in which she is a free woman and one where she is part of her own complicated familial history on a southern plantation, she becomes frighteningly entangled in the lives of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder and one of Dana’s own ancestors, and the many people who are enslaved by him."

All You Need is Kill
by Ryosuke Tekeuchi and Takeshi Obata
Adapted from Kiroshi Sakurazaka's novel (which was the inspiration for the recent Tom Cruise film Edge of Tomorrow), All You Need is Kill follows a new recruit killed in a seemingly endless and hopeless war against alien invaders, only to find himself awake and confused at the beginning of his last day among the living.

Paper Girls
by Brian K Vaughan and Cliff Chiang
From the publisher: "In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood."

Durham Comics Project: Drink & DrawWednesday, Feb. 20, 7-9 p.m.This monthly meetup is for those new to comics and seasoned vets alike.
